Notifier FRM-1

Notifier FRM-1 Control Relay Module User Manual

Model: FRM-1

Introduction

The Notifier FRM-1 Control Relay Module is designed for use with intelligent addressable fire alarm control panels. It provides a Form-C dry contact relay for controlling external devices such as door holders, fans, dampers, or other auxiliary equipment. The module receives commands from the fire alarm control panel to activate or deactivate the relay, allowing for flexible system integration and control.

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of the FRM-1 Control Relay Module.

The FRM-1 module features screw terminals for easy connection to the Signaling Line Circuit (SLC) and the controlled device. It is designed for panel mounting and includes a robust housing for durability. The module's compact size allows for versatile installation within various enclosures.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the reliable operation of the FRM-1 module. Always refer to local codes and the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (NFPA 72) for specific installation requirements.

Pre-Installation Checklist:

Mounting:

The FRM-1 module is designed for panel mounting. Secure the module using appropriate fasteners to a stable surface within the control panel enclosure or a standard 4-inch square electrical box.

Wiring Instructions:

Connect the module to the fire alarm control panel's Signaling Line Circuit (SLC) and the external device according to the wiring diagram provided in your control panel's manual and the FRM-1 installation sheet. The module features screw terminals for secure connections.

Ensure all connections are tight and properly insulated. Incorrect wiring can lead to system malfunctions or damage.

Operating Principles

The Notifier FRM-1 operates as an addressable control module. Each module is assigned a unique address on the SLC loop during system programming. When the fire alarm control panel sends a command to this specific address, the internal relay within the FRM-1 module activates or deactivates, changing the state of its Form-C contacts.

This allows the control panel to remotely switch on or off external devices connected to the module, such as audible/visual notification appliances, smoke control dampers, or magnetic door holders, in response to alarm conditions or programmed events.

Addressing:

The module's address is set via rotary switches or similar mechanisms on the device itself. This address must correspond to the address programmed in the fire alarm control panel for proper communication and control.

Maintenance

The Notifier FRM-1 Control Relay Module is designed for long-term reliability with minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended as part of your overall fire alarm system maintenance schedule.

Routine Checks:

Any maintenance or testing should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

Troubleshooting

If the Notifier FRM-1 module is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues and their potential solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Module not responding to commands.Incorrect address setting.
SLC wiring issue.
Module failure.
Verify the module's address matches the control panel programming.
Check SLC wiring for opens, shorts, or incorrect connections.
Replace the module if other troubleshooting steps fail.
Connected device not activating/deactivating.Incorrect relay wiring.
Faulty connected device.
Relay contacts damaged.
Review the wiring diagram for the connected device and relay contacts.
Test the connected device independently.
If relay contacts are suspected, replace the module.
Module reports a fault on the control panel.SLC wiring fault (open/short).
Module internal fault.
Inspect SLC wiring for damage. Use a multimeter to check continuity.
If wiring is confirmed good, the module may be faulty and require replacement.

For complex issues or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact a qualified fire alarm technician or Notifier technical support.
