Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your rock tumbler for its first use:

1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all items from the packaging and ensure all listed components are present.
2. Position the Tumbler: Place the rock tumbler base on a stable, flat surface. Consider a location where the low hum of the motor will not be disruptive, such as a garage or basement.
3. Prepare Rocks: Select rough rocks for the first tumbling cycle. Ensure they are clean of any loose dirt.
4. Load the Barrel:
   • Add the rough rocks to the rubber-lined tumbler barrel.
   • Add the appropriate amount of Stage 1 Coarse Grit (refer to the learning guide for specific measurements based on rock quantity).
   • Add water to the barrel until it just covers the rocks and grit. Do not overfill.
5. Seal the Barrel: Securely close the leak-proof barrel lid. Ensure it is tightly sealed to prevent leaks during operation.
6. Place on Base: Place the loaded barrel onto the tumbler base, ensuring it sits correctly on the rollers.
7. Connect Power: Plug the power adapter into the tumbler base and then into a standard electrical outlet.
8. Start Tumbling: The tumbler will begin rotating the barrel. Allow it to run for the recommended duration for Stage 1 (typically 7-10 days).

Operating Instructions: The Tumbling Process

The rock tumbling process involves four distinct stages, each using a different grit to progressively smooth and polish your rocks. Each stage typically lasts 7-10 days. Always clean the barrel and rocks thoroughly between stages to prevent cross-contamination of grits.

1. Stage 1: Coarse Grit (7-10 Days)
   • Use the Stage 1 Coarse Grit.
   • This stage is for shaping and smoothing rough edges.
   • After 7-10 days, unplug the tumbler. Carefully open the barrel and empty its contents into a strainer. Rinse the rocks and the barrel thoroughly under running water. Do not drain grit into household plumbing as it can cause clogs. Dispose of used grit responsibly.
   • Inspect rocks. If they still have significant rough spots, repeat Stage 1 with fresh coarse grit.
2. Stage 2: Medium Grit (7-10 Days)
   • Load the cleaned rocks back into the barrel.
   • Add the Stage 2 Medium Grit and water (just covering rocks and grit).
   • Seal the barrel and tumble for 7-10 days.
   • Clean rocks and barrel as described in Stage 1.
3. Stage 3: Fine Grit (7-10 Days)
   • Load the cleaned rocks back into the barrel.
   • Add the Stage 3 Fine Grit and water.
   • Seal the barrel and tumble for 7-10 days.
   • Clean rocks and barrel as described in Stage 1.
4. Stage 4: Polish (7-10 Days)
   • Load the cleaned rocks back into the barrel. Ensure the barrel is exceptionally clean, as any residual coarse grit can scratch the rocks.
   • Add the Stage 4 Polish and water.
   • Seal the barrel and tumble for 7-10 days.
   • After this stage, your rocks should have a smooth, polished finish. For an enhanced shine, you may apply a small amount of mineral oil to the finished stones.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your rock tumbler.

• Barrel Cleaning: Always rinse the rubber-lined barrel thoroughly between each tumbling stage. Residual grit from previous stages can contaminate the next stage and prevent proper polishing. Use a brush to remove any lodged grit.
• Barrel Seal: The barrel is designed to be leak-proof. Ensure the lid is always securely fastened. If you notice any leaks, check the rubber gasket for damage or proper seating.
• Motor Base: Keep the motor base clean and dry. Wipe it with a damp cloth if necessary, but never submerge it in water.
• Noise Reduction: The rubber-lined barrel helps reduce noise. If the tumbler becomes excessively loud, ensure it is on a stable surface and that the barrel is properly seated on the rollers.
• Opening the Barrel: The barrel lid can sometimes be difficult to open due to the tight seal. If you encounter difficulty, try twisting firmly or using a jar opener for leverage.

Once your gemstones are polished, you can use the included jewelry fastenings to create custom pieces. The kit includes components for a necklace, a key chain, a ring, and two clip-on earrings.

• Necklace/Key Chain: Insert a polished stone into the spiral cage and attach it to the provided necklace cord or key chain ring.
• Ring: Select a small, polished stone and secure it into the adjustable ring base.
• Earrings: Choose two matching polished stones and attach them to the clip-on earring fastenings.
