4. Setup and Fitting
Proper fitting is crucial for safety and comfort. Follow these steps to don and adjust your harness:
- Inspect: Before each use, perform a thorough visual inspection as described in Section 7.
- Untangle: Hold the dorsal D-ring and shake the harness to allow all straps to fall into place. Ensure no straps are twisted.
- Don the Harness: Step into the leg straps, ensuring they are not twisted. Pull the harness up over your shoulders.
- Connect Leg Straps: Fasten the leg strap buckles. Adjust them so they are snug but not overly tight, allowing for full range of motion.
- Connect Chest Strap: Fasten the chest strap buckle. Position it across the mid-chest area.
- Adjust Shoulder Straps: Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure the dorsal D-ring is positioned between your shoulder blades. The harness should feel secure on your torso.
- Adjust Waist Belt: Tighten the waist belt for a snug fit around your waist, ensuring the side D-rings are positioned appropriately for work positioning if needed.
- Final Check: Ensure all buckles are securely fastened, all straps are free of twists, and the harness fits snugly without restricting movement or breathing.
5. Operating Instructions
The Irudek Expert Pro Harness is designed for vertical work and suspension. Always connect to an appropriate anchorage point using compatible fall arrest or work positioning equipment.
- Fall Arrest: For fall arrest, connect your lanyard or fall arrest system to the dorsal D-ring (on the back) or the sternal D-ring (on the front). Ensure the connection point is above the user to minimize fall distance.
- Work Positioning: For work positioning, use the side D-rings on the waist belt. These are designed to support the user in a working position, allowing hands-free operation. Always use a separate fall arrest system in conjunction with work positioning.
- Rope Access/Suspension: The sternal D-ring is suitable for connecting to rope access systems or for suspension. The harness also allows for the addition of a ventral rope blocker for enhanced functionality in these applications.
- Compatibility: Ensure all connecting devices (lanyards, connectors, rope blockers) are compatible with the harness and meet relevant safety standards.
- Rescue Plan: Always have a rescue plan in place when working at height.
6. Maintenance and Care
Proper maintenance extends the life of your harness and ensures its continued safety.
- Cleaning: The harness should be cleaned by hand washing only. Use mild soap and lukewarm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
- Drying: Allow the harness to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
- Disinfection: If disinfection is required, use a non-phenolic disinfectant and follow the cleaning instructions.
- Avoid Contaminants: Protect the harness from contact with sharp objects, open flames, acids, alkalis, oils, and other corrosive substances.
7. Inspection
Regular inspection is critical for user safety. A thorough inspection must be performed before each use and periodically by a competent person.
- Pre-Use Inspection: Visually inspect all webbing for cuts, fraying, excessive wear, discoloration, or chemical damage. Check all stitching for loose or broken threads. Examine all metal components (D-rings, buckles) for deformation, cracks, corrosion, or sharp edges. Ensure buckles operate smoothly and securely.
- Periodic Inspection: A competent person must perform a detailed inspection at least every 12 months, or more frequently depending on usage and environmental conditions. Record all inspection dates and results.
- Retirement: Immediately remove from service any harness that shows signs of damage, excessive wear, or has been subjected to a fall. The harness must be retired after a maximum service life as specified by the manufacturer, regardless of its condition.
8. Storage
Store the harness properly to prevent damage and degradation.
- Store in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, humidity, and corrosive environments.
- Ensure the harness is clean and dry before storage.
- Do not store near sharp objects or chemicals.
