Image 1: The INSIZE 5091-E Measuring Tool Set, neatly arranged within its protective green carrying case. The set includes an electronic caliper, outside micrometer, protractor, pitch gauge, radius gauge, feeler gauge, 90-degree beveled edge square, scriber, and steel rule.
Components of the Set
- Electronic Caliper (Part No. 1108-150): Range 0-6" / 0-150mm, Resolution 0.0005" / 0.01mm. Used for external, internal, depth, and step measurements.
- Outside Micrometer (Part No. 3202-1): Range 0-1", Graduation 0.0001". Used for highly precise external measurements.
- Protractor (Part No. 4799-180): Range 0-180°, Graduation 1°. Used for measuring and laying out angles.
- Pitch Gauge (Part No. 4820-230): Range 4-42 TPI, 30 pieces, Unified 60° thread. Used for identifying thread pitch.
- Radius Gauge (Part No. 4801-15E): Range 1/32" - 1/4". Used for checking the radius of curved surfaces.
- Feeler Gauge: Range 0.0015" - 0.035", 31 pieces. Used for measuring small gaps or clearances.
- 90° Beveled Edge Square: Used for checking squareness and marking lines at right angles.
- Scriber: Used for marking lines on metal or other materials.
- Steel Rule: 6 inch length. Used for general linear measurements.
Setup and Preparation
- Unpacking: Carefully remove all tools from the protective case. Inspect each tool for any signs of damage during transit.
- Cleaning: Before first use, wipe down all metal surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth. For precision tools like the caliper and micrometer, use a specialized cleaning solution if necessary, followed by a light application of instrument oil to prevent corrosion.
- Electronic Caliper Battery: The electronic caliper requires a battery (typically SR44 or LR44). Insert the battery according to the polarity markings in the battery compartment.
Operating Instructions
Electronic Caliper (Part No. 1108-150)
- Power On/Off: Press the "ON/OFF" button to turn the caliper on or off.
- Zero Setting: Close the jaws completely and press the "ZERO" button to set the display to zero. This ensures accurate relative measurements.
- Unit Conversion: Press the "in/mm" button to switch between inches and millimeters.
- Measurement: Gently open the jaws, position the workpiece, and close the jaws until they make firm contact. Read the measurement directly from the digital display.
Outside Micrometer (Part No. 3202-1)
- Zero Check: Before use, clean the anvil and spindle faces. Gently close them using the ratchet stop until they meet. The thimble's zero line should align with the sleeve's datum line. If not, adjust using the provided wrench.
- Measurement: Place the workpiece between the anvil and spindle. Rotate the thimble until the spindle lightly touches the workpiece, then use the ratchet stop for consistent pressure. Read the measurement from the sleeve and thimble scales.
Protractor (Part No. 4799-180)
- Angle Measurement: Place the base of the protractor firmly against one edge of the angle to be measured. Align the movable arm with the second edge. Read the angle directly from the scale.
Pitch Gauge (Part No. 4820-230)
- Thread Identification: Select a blade from the set and try to fit its teeth into the threads of the workpiece. The correct blade will fit snugly without any light visible between the blade and the thread profile. The pitch is indicated on the blade.
Radius Gauge (Part No. 4801-15E)
- Radius Check: Select a blade from the set and place it against the curved surface of the workpiece. The correct blade will match the curve perfectly, with no gaps or rocking. The radius is indicated on the blade.
Feeler Gauge
- Gap Measurement: Select a blade or combination of blades that can be inserted into the gap with slight drag. The thickness of the blade(s) indicates the gap size.
90° Beveled Edge Square
- Checking Squareness: Place one edge of the square against a known straight edge or surface. Bring the other edge of the square against the workpiece. Any gap or light visible indicates deviation from 90 degrees.
Scriber
- Marking: Use the sharp point of the scriber to draw fine lines on materials like metal, plastic, or wood for layout purposes.
Steel Rule
- Linear Measurement: Place the rule directly against the object to be measured and read the length from the engraved markings.
Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe all tools clean with a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt, oil, or fingerprints. For precision tools, use a non-abrasive cleaner if necessary.
- Lubrication: Apply a thin film of light machine oil to the moving parts and measuring surfaces of the caliper and micrometer to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. Avoid over-lubrication.
- Storage: Store all tools in their original protective case in a dry, clean environment to prevent damage and corrosion. Keep away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Replacement (Electronic Caliper): When the display becomes dim or erratic, replace the battery. Refer to the caliper's specific instructions for battery type and replacement procedure.
- Calibration: Periodically check the calibration of precision tools like the caliper and micrometer. If significant deviation is observed, recalibrate or have them professionally serviced.
Troubleshooting
- Electronic Caliper Display Not Working: Check battery installation and charge. Replace battery if necessary. Ensure contacts are clean.
- Inaccurate Readings (Caliper/Micrometer): Ensure jaws/spindle faces are clean and free of debris. Perform a zero-setting check. Avoid excessive force during measurement. Check for wear or damage.
- Tools Sticking/Rough Movement: Clean and lightly lubricate moving parts. Check for debris obstructing movement.
