2. Safety Precautions

Always prioritize safety when working with electrical components and bicycles. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury, damage to the product, or property damage.

  • Professional Installation Recommended: If you are not confident with mechanical or electrical work, seek assistance from a qualified bicycle mechanic or e-bike specialist.
  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect the battery before performing any installation, maintenance, or repair work on the motor or electrical components.
  • Electrical Connections: Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly insulated to prevent short circuits and water ingress.
  • Brake Check: After installation, thoroughly test your bicycle's brakes to ensure they are fully functional. The kit includes new brake levers with motor cut-off switches; ensure these are correctly installed and tested.
  • Component Compatibility: Verify that all components are compatible with your bicycle frame and existing parts before installation.
  • Water Exposure: While the motor is designed to be water-resistant (IP65), avoid submerging the motor or exposing electrical connections to excessive water.
  • Local Regulations: Be aware of and comply with all local laws and regulations regarding electric bicycles, including maximum power output and speed limits.
  • Protective Gear: Always wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, when riding your e-bike.

4. Installation Guide

This section outlines the general steps for installing the Bafang BBS01 kit. Specific tools (crank puller, bottom bracket tool, torque wrench, hex keys, cable ties) will be required.

  1. Prepare the Bicycle:
    • Remove existing crankset, bottom bracket, and front derailleur (if applicable).
    • Clean the bottom bracket shell thoroughly.
  2. Install the Motor Unit:
    • Slide the motor unit into the bottom bracket shell from the drive side.
    • Secure the motor with the locking plates and nuts on the non-drive side. Tighten to specified torque.
  3. Install Chainring and Crank Arms:
    • Attach the chainring to the motor unit.
    • Install the left and right crank arms onto the motor spindle.
  4. Mount Display and Controls:
    • Mount the display unit (C961/C965) on the handlebars.
    • Install the new brake levers (with motor cut-off sensors) and the thumb throttle (if included) on the handlebars.
  5. Install Speed Sensor:
    • Mount the speed sensor on the rear chainstay, ensuring it aligns with a spoke magnet.
    • Attach the magnet to a spoke on the rear wheel.
  6. Connect Wiring:
    • Connect all cables to the main motor harness: display, brake levers, throttle, and speed sensor.
    • Connect the battery cable to the motor unit.
    • Route and secure all cables neatly using cable ties, ensuring they do not interfere with moving parts.
  7. Final Checks:
    • Double-check all connections for security.
    • Ensure the chain is properly aligned and tensioned.
    • Test brake functionality and motor cut-off.
    • Verify all bolts and nuts are tightened to specifications.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed, operating your Bafang e-bike kit is straightforward.

  1. Power On:
    • Ensure the battery is securely mounted and turned on (if it has a separate switch).
    • Press and hold the power button on the display unit (C961/C965) for a few seconds until the screen illuminates.
  2. Select Assist Level:
    • Use the '+' and '-' buttons on the display to cycle through the pedal-assist levels (typically 0-5 or 0-9). Level 0 provides no assistance, while higher numbers provide more motor power.
  3. Pedal Assist:
    • Begin pedaling. The motor will engage and provide assistance based on the selected assist level and your pedaling input.
  4. Throttle Operation (if applicable):
    • If your kit includes a thumb throttle, you can use it to engage the motor without pedaling. Gently press the throttle lever to apply power. Release to disengage.
  5. Brake Cut-off:
    • Squeezing either brake lever will instantly cut power to the motor, ensuring safe stopping.
  6. Power Off:
    • Press and hold the power button on the display unit until the screen turns off.
    • Turn off the battery switch (if applicable) when not in use for extended periods.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Bafang e-bike kit.

  • Cleaning:
    • Clean the motor and components with a damp cloth. Avoid high-pressure washing directly on electrical parts.
    • Keep the speed sensor and magnet clean for accurate readings.
  • Electrical Connections:
    • Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion or looseness. Ensure they are securely seated.
  • Fasteners:
    • Regularly check all bolts and nuts, especially those securing the motor, crank arms, and chainring, to ensure they remain tight.
  • Chain and Drivetrain:
    • Maintain your bicycle's chain and drivetrain (cassette, derailleur) as you would a regular bicycle. Keep them clean and lubricated.
  • Battery Care:
    • Refer to your battery's specific manual for charging and storage instructions. Generally, store in a cool, dry place and avoid fully discharging for extended periods.
