Setup
Before first use, ensure all packaging materials are removed. Place the grinder on a stable, level surface. Ensure the power cord is connected to a grounded electrical outlet.
Initial Assembly:
- Unpack all components: grinder base, bean hopper with lid, grounds bin, and portafilter holder.
- Place the grinder base on a clean, dry countertop.
- Insert the conical burr into the grinding chamber if it's not already installed.
- Attach the bean hopper by aligning it with the top of the grinder and twisting clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure the hopper shut-off gate is open when ready to grind.
- Select your desired grinding accessory: either the included grounds bin or the portafilter holder. Slide it into the designated slot beneath the grinding chamber.
Operating Instructions
The Sette 270 offers precise control over your grind with its intuitive interface.
Loading Beans:
- Ensure the hopper shut-off gate is closed before adding beans.
- Pour fresh, roasted coffee beans into the hopper. The hopper holds up to 14 ounces of coffee.
- Open the hopper shut-off gate to allow beans to enter the grinding chamber.
Adjusting Grind Settings:
The Sette 270 features 270 grind settings for exceptional precision.
- Macro Adjustment: Rotate the large outer ring to select one of 31 macro settings (numbered 1-31). These settings cover a wide range from fine espresso to coarse French press.
- Micro Adjustment: For finer tuning, especially for espresso, rotate the smaller inner ring (labeled A-H). This stepless adjustment allows for minute changes in grind size.
- Adjusting the grind size while the grinder is running or with a small amount of beans can help prevent burr damage.
Dosing and Grinding:
The Sette 270 features 3 programmable dosing buttons for accurate, consistent dosing to within a 10th of a second.
- Programming Presets:
- Place your portafilter or grounds bin under the grinding chute.
- Press the desired preset button (1, 2, or 3) to select it.
- Use the up/down arrows to adjust the grind time (in seconds) to your desired dose.
- Press and hold the selected preset button until it flashes, indicating the time has been saved.
- Grinding:
- Place your portafilter or grounds bin under the grinding chute.

Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and consistent performance of your Baratza Sette 270.
Daily Cleaning:
- After each use, tap the portafilter or grounds bin to dislodge any remaining grounds.
- Wipe down the exterior of the grinder with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
Weekly/Bi-Weekly Cleaning (or as needed):
- Empty Hopper: Close the hopper shut-off gate and remove the hopper. Empty any remaining beans.
- Remove Burrs: Rotate the macro adjustment ring to the coarsest setting (31). Gently lift the outer burr ring assembly. The inner burr can then be removed.
- Brush Cleaning: Use the provided brush or a stiff brush to clean coffee grounds from both the inner and outer burrs, as well as the grinding chamber.
- Reassembly: Reinsert the inner burr, then the outer burr ring assembly, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reattach the hopper.
- Static Solution: If experiencing static cling with grounds, a fine mist of water on whole beans before grinding can help.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Sette 270.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Grinder not turning on. | No power, hopper not seated correctly. | Check power connection. Ensure hopper is fully seated and locked. |
| No coffee coming out / Grinder choked. | Grind setting too fine, burrs clogged. | Adjust to a coarser grind setting. Clean burrs and grinding chamber thoroughly. |
| Excessive static cling of grounds. | Dry beans, environmental factors. | Lightly mist whole beans with water before grinding (one or two squirts for a batch). |
| Inconsistent dosing by time. | Bean density variation, retention. | For precision, use a scale to weigh your dose. Purge a small amount of coffee if switching beans or grind settings. |
| Motor runs but no grinding occurs. | Motor wired backwards (rare manufacturing defect). | WARNING: Unplug unit before inspecting. This is a rare issue. If comfortable with electronics, inspect motor wiring (red/black wires) and reverse if necessary. Otherwise, contact Baratza support. |
