Setup

Before initial use, follow these steps to prepare your Brita pitcher and filter:

  1. Wash Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the filter.
  2. Prepare Filter: Flush the new Brita filter with cold water for 15 seconds. This helps to remove any loose carbon dust.
  3. Install Filter: Carefully insert the prepared filter into the designated slot within the pitcher's reservoir. Ensure it is seated firmly to prevent unfiltered water from bypassing it.
  4. Initial Fill: Add cold tap water to the pitcher. The first three pitchers of filtered water may contain harmless carbon dust. It is recommended to use this water for plants or discard it.

Operating Instructions

Using your Brita pitcher is straightforward:

  • Filling: Open the flip-top lid and pour tap water directly into the reservoir. The water will slowly pass through the filter into the main pitcher compartment.
  • Filtration Process: The Brita filter utilizes ion-exchange resin to reduce impurities and activated carbon (made from recycled coconut shells) to trap chlorine, improving taste and odor. Built-in mesh screens prevent black flecks from entering your filtered water.
  • Pouring: Once the water has filtered into the main pitcher, it is ready to drink. The pitcher is designed for easy pouring and fits conveniently on refrigerator shelves.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and water quality:

  • Filter Replacement: For best results, replace your Brita Standard filter after 40 gallons of use or approximately every 2 months. If using a Longlast filter, replace it after 120 gallons or approximately every 6 months. The pitcher may feature a sticker filter indicator to help you track replacement times.
  • Cleaning the Pitcher: The pitcher components (excluding the filter) can be hand-washed with mild detergent and warm water. Ensure all parts are thoroughly rinsed before reassembly. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Brita pitcher, consider the following:

  • Slow Filtration: If water filters slowly, the filter may be nearing the end of its lifespan or could be clogged. Try replacing the filter. Ensure the filter is properly seated.
  • Unpleasant Taste/Odor: If the water does not taste clean, it is likely time to replace the filter. Ensure the filter was properly flushed before its first use.
  • Safety Information: The Brita filter is not intended to purify water. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.
  • Pitcher Stability: Ensure the pitcher is placed on a flat, stable surface. If the reservoir is full and the main pitcher is empty, it may feel top-heavy.
