Setup and Installation

Safety First: Always unplug your dryer from the power outlet and turn off the gas supply (for gas dryers) before performing any installation or maintenance.

This image displays the various duct pieces, an elbow, and a blanking plate, which together form the complete side vent kit.

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Dryer: Ensure the dryer is unplugged and gas supply is off. Move the dryer away from the wall to access the rear and sides.
  2. Remove Rear Vent Cover: If your dryer currently vents from the rear, remove the existing rear vent cover and any attached ducting.
  3. Punch Out Side Vent Opening: Identify the desired side or bottom vent location on your dryer. Carefully punch out the designated circular opening. Some models may require gently prying or cutting tabs. Smooth any rough edges.
  4. Assemble Internal Ducting: Connect the appropriate duct pieces (straight sections and elbow) to form the internal pathway from the dryer's blower housing to the newly created side or bottom opening. Ensure a secure fit.
  5. Insert and Secure Ducting: Carefully insert the assembled internal ducting into the dryer. Guide the elbow and straight sections through the rear and side/bottom openings. Secure the ducting to the dryer's internal structure and the side/bottom panel using the provided screws or clips. Note: Many users find it possible to install this kit without fully disassembling the dryer's drum or casing by working through the existing rear and new side openings.
  6. Install Blanking Plate: Insert the provided blanking plate into the original rear vent opening (or the unused side/bottom opening) to seal it off. Ensure it snaps securely into place.
  7. Connect External Vent Hose: Attach your external dryer vent hose to the newly installed side or bottom vent outlet. Secure it with a clamp to ensure an airtight connection.
  8. Final Checks: Verify all connections are secure and airtight. Ensure no lint can escape from internal connections.
  9. Restore Power: Plug the dryer back into the power outlet and turn on the gas supply (if applicable).

Operating Considerations

Once the side vent kit is installed, ensure that the external vent hose is not kinked or crushed, as this can restrict airflow. Proper airflow is crucial for efficient drying and to prevent lint buildup. Always clean the dryer's lint filter before or after every load.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your dryer's venting system is essential for safety and performance.

  • Lint Filter Cleaning: Clean the dryer's lint filter before or after each load.
  • Vent Inspection: Periodically inspect the entire vent path, from the dryer's internal ducting to the exterior vent hood, for lint accumulation.
  • Vent Cleaning: Clean the dryer vent ductwork at least once a year, or more frequently if you notice longer drying times or excessive lint buildup. Use a vent cleaning brush or a vacuum cleaner with a long hose attachment.
  • Exterior Vent Hood: Ensure the exterior vent hood is clear of obstructions (e.g., bird nests, debris) and that its damper opens and closes freely.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues after installing the side vent kit, consider the following:

  • Long Drying Times: This is often an indication of restricted airflow. Check for kinks in the external vent hose, lint buildup in the ductwork, or a blocked exterior vent hood. Ensure all internal connections of the side vent kit are secure and not leaking air.
  • Excessive Lint Around Dryer: This suggests a leak in the venting system. Re-inspect all connections of the side vent kit, including where it connects to the dryer's blower and the external vent hose. Ensure the blanking plate is properly sealed.
  • Dryer Overheating: Restricted airflow can cause the dryer to overheat. Immediately check and clear any blockages in the vent system.

If problems persist, consult a qualified appliance technician.
