1. Important Safety Instructions
Read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating this electric pole saw. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and a hard hat when operating the pole saw. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the power cord is in good condition and suitable for outdoor use. Do not operate in wet conditions. Keep the cord away from the cutting area.
- Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from the work area. Clear the area of obstacles and ensure stable footing.
- Tool Handling: Hold the pole saw firmly with both hands. Do not overreach. Maintain proper balance and footing at all times.
- Kickback Prevention: Be aware of the chain's rotation direction and potential kickback. Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar.
- Maintenance: Disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance, cleaning, or adjustments.

Figure 2.2: The pole saw offers up to 13.7 feet of overhead reach for effective tree trimming.
3. Setup
Proper assembly and preparation are crucial for safe and efficient operation.

Figure 3.1: Package contents of the PowerSmart PS6108 Electric Pole Saw.
3.1 Assembly
- Unpack Components: Carefully remove all items from the packaging. Verify that all parts listed in the manual are present.
- Connect Pole Sections: If the pole saw comes in multiple sections, align and securely connect them. Ensure the electrical connections within the pole are properly seated.
- Install Chain and Guide Bar: If not pre-assembled, follow the instructions in your owner's manual to correctly install the 8-inch chain onto the guide bar and attach it to the motor housing. Ensure the chain direction is correct.
3.2 Chain Tension Adjustment
Correct chain tension is vital for safe operation and optimal cutting performance. A chain that is too loose can derail, and a chain that is too tight can cause excessive wear and damage.

Figure 3.2: The auto tension system simplifies chain adjustment.
- Check Tension: The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still able to be pulled around by hand. There should be no slack on the underside of the guide bar.
- Adjust: Use the tension knob (or tool-free adjustment mechanism) to tighten or loosen the chain as needed. Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions on your model's tensioning system.
- Re-check: After initial use, the chain may stretch. Re-check and adjust tension after the first few cuts and periodically during operation.
3.3 Filling the Oil Tank
The pole saw features an automatic lubrication system to ensure the chain and guide bar remain properly oiled during operation, reducing friction and extending component life.

Figure 3.3: The 1.8 oz oil tank for the automatic lubrication system.
- Use Proper Oil: Use only high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use waste oil or motor oil, as this can damage the pump and chain.
- Locate Oil Cap: Unscrew the oil tank cap, typically located near the saw head.
- Fill Tank: Carefully pour bar and chain oil into the tank until it reaches the maximum fill line. Avoid overfilling.
- Secure Cap: Replace the oil cap securely to prevent leaks.
- Check Oil Level: Periodically check the oil level during operation and refill as necessary.
4. Operating Instructions
Follow these guidelines for safe and effective operation of your pole saw.
4.1 Starting and Stopping
- Connect Power: Plug the pole saw into a suitable outdoor-rated extension cord, ensuring the cord is rated for the saw's amperage.
- Starting: Press and hold the safety lock button, then squeeze the trigger switch to start the motor.
- Stopping: Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop quickly due to the integrated brake feature.
4.2 Cutting Techniques
Always plan your cuts to ensure the branch falls safely and does not cause injury or damage.

Figure 4.1: The 8-inch chain and bar are suitable for cutting branches up to 8 inches in diameter.
- Positioning: Stand firmly on the ground. Do not operate the pole saw from a ladder. Extend the pole to the desired length, ensuring you maintain control.
- Undercut First: For larger branches, make a small undercut on the underside of the branch, about one-third of the way through. This prevents the branch from splitting and pinching the saw.
- Top Cut: Make the main cut from the top of the branch, slightly further out from the undercut. Allow the saw to do the work; do not force it.
- Limb Removal: Cut limbs in sections if they are long or heavy to manage their fall safely.
- Avoid Obstructions: Be aware of power lines, fences, and other obstructions.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your pole saw.
5.1 Chain Lubrication
The automatic lubrication system requires a consistent supply of bar and chain oil. Always check the oil level before each use and during extended operation.
- Refill: Refer to Section 3.3 for instructions on filling the oil tank.
- Check Flow: Ensure oil is being dispensed onto the chain. If not, check for clogs in the oil port.
5.2 Chain and Guide Bar Care
- Sharpening: A sharp chain cuts efficiently and safely. Sharpen the chain regularly using a suitable file kit. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct file size and angle.
- Replacement: Replace the chain when it becomes dull beyond sharpening, damaged, or worn. Always use a genuine PowerSmart replacement chain.
- Guide Bar Maintenance: Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes regularly. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
5.3 Cleaning and Storage
- Cleaning: After each use, disconnect power and clean the saw head, chain, and pole with a brush or cloth to remove sawdust and debris.
- Storage: Store the pole saw in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children. Use the provided scabbard to cover the guide bar and chain.
