Fluke 115 Compact True-RMS Digital Multimeter User Manual

Model: 115

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Fluke 115 Compact True-RMS Digital Multimeter. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure proper functionality and safety.

Safety Information

WARNING:

To prevent possible electrical shock, fire, or personal injury, read all safety information before you use the product. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe injury or death.

  • Always use the Multimeter with the correct function, range, and measurement category (CAT) rating for the voltage and current being measured.
  • Inspect test leads for damaged insulation or exposed metal. Replace damaged leads immediately.
  • Do not use the Multimeter if it operates abnormally. Protection may be impaired.
  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the Multimeter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution with voltages above 30 V AC RMS, 42 V peak, or 60 V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Do not operate the Multimeter around explosive gas, vapor, or dust.

Package Contents

The Fluke 115 Digital Multimeter package typically includes the following items:

  • Fluke 115 Digital Multimeter
  • Test Leads (one red, one black)
  • 9V Battery (often pre-installed)
  • Fluke C35 Polyester Soft Carrying Case
  • User Manual (this document)

Product Overview

The Fluke 115 is a compact True-RMS digital multimeter designed for field service technicians. It provides accurate measurements for various electrical parameters in commercial and light industrial applications.

Controls and Connectors

The Fluke 115 features a large backlit display, a rotary switch for function selection, and input jacks for test leads.

  • Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and various indicators.
  • Rotary Switch: Used to select the desired measurement function (e.g., AC/DC Voltage, Resistance, Current, Frequency, Capacitance, Diode Test).
  • HOLD Button: Freezes the current reading on the display.
  • RANGE Button: Allows manual selection of measurement ranges instead of auto-ranging.
  • MIN MAX Button: Records and displays the minimum, maximum, and average readings over a measurement period.
  • Input Jacks:
    • VΩHzCAP: Positive input terminal for voltage, resistance, frequency, and capacitance measurements.
    • COM: Common (negative) input terminal for all measurements.
    • A: Positive input terminal for current measurements up to 10A (20A for 30 seconds).

Setup

Battery Installation/Replacement

The Fluke 115 typically comes with a 9V battery pre-installed. If the battery needs replacement or installation:

  1. Turn the multimeter OFF and disconnect all test leads from the device and any circuits.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery compartment cover.
  4. Carefully remove the cover.
  5. Replace the old 9V battery with a new one, ensuring correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
  6. Reinstall the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

Connecting Test Leads

Always connect the common (black) test lead to the COM jack first. Then, connect the red test lead to the appropriate function jack (VΩHzCAP or A) for your intended measurement. When disconnecting, remove the red test lead first, then the black test lead.

Operating Instructions

Measuring AC/DC Voltage (V~ / V-)

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHzCAP jack.
  3. Connect the test probes across the circuit or component to be measured.
  4. Read the voltage value displayed on the screen.

Measuring Resistance (Ω) and Continuity

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHzCAP jack.
  3. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before connecting the test probes across it.
  4. Read the resistance value. For continuity, the multimeter will emit an audible beep if the resistance is below a certain threshold.

Measuring Current (A~ / A-)

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the A~ (AC Current) or A- (DC Current) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the A jack.
  3. WARNING: To avoid personal injury or damage to the multimeter, do not attempt to measure current in a circuit where the potential to ground exceeds 600V. Always connect the multimeter in series with the load.
  4. Open the circuit where you want to measure current and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
  5. Read the current value on the display.

Measuring Frequency (Hz) and Capacitance (CAP)

To measure frequency or capacitance, turn the rotary switch to the respective Hz or CAP position. The connection method is similar to voltage and resistance measurements, respectively, using the VΩHzCAP and COM jacks. Ensure capacitors are discharged before measuring capacitance.

Diode Test

The diode test function allows for checking the forward voltage drop of a diode. Turn the rotary switch to the diode symbol. Connect the red lead to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop in volts.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Wipe the case of the multimeter with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the plastic. If necessary, clean the input jacks with cotton swabs lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol.

Battery Replacement

Refer to the "Battery Installation/Replacement" section under Setup for detailed instructions on replacing the 9V battery.

Storage

When not in use, store the multimeter and its accessories in the provided carrying case in a dry, dust-free environment. If storing the multimeter for extended periods (e.g., more than one month), it is recommended to remove the battery to prevent potential leakage and damage to the device.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display or dim displayDead or low batteryReplace the 9V battery.
Incorrect readingsIncorrect function/range selected; Damaged test leads; Dirty input jacksVerify the correct function and range are selected. Inspect and replace damaged test leads. Clean input jacks if necessary.
Multimeter does not respond during current measurementInternal fuse blown (for current measurements)The current input is protected by a fuse. If the fuse is blown, the multimeter will not measure current. Consult a qualified service technician for fuse replacement. Do not attempt to replace the fuse yourself unless you are qualified.
Display shows "OL" (Overload)Measurement exceeds selected range or meter's maximum capabilitySelect a higher range or ensure the measurement is within the meter's specifications.
