Behringer CT200 8-in-1 Cable Tester Instruction Manual
Model: CT200 | Brand: Behringer
Introduction
The Behringer CT200 is a microprocessor-controlled 8-in-1 cable tester designed for comprehensive testing of various cable types. It features three primary modes: cable test, installed cable test, and test tone mode. This versatile tool helps identify issues such as crossed wires, shorts, open connections, and intermittent faults, ensuring optimal performance of your audio and data connections.
Setup
Battery Installation
The CT200 operates on two AA batteries. To install or replace batteries, locate the battery compartment on the underside of the unit. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery compartment cover. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Replace the cover and secure it with the screw.

Operating Instructions
General Operation
The CT200 features an intuitive interface with an LED indicator for test results. To begin testing, ensure the unit is powered on. Select the desired mode using the MODE switch.
Cable Test Mode
This mode is used for testing individual cables. Connect one end of the cable to an "OUT" port and the other end to an "IN" port on the tester. The LED display will show the pin connections, and indicator lights will illuminate to show the status of each connection (e.g., Pass, Crossed, Shorted, Open, Intermittent). Press the RESET button after inserting both ends of the cable to clear previous readings and initiate a new test.
Supported Cable Types:
- XLR (3-pin)
- 1/4" TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve)
- 1/8" TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve)
- RCA
- MIDI (5-pin DIN)
- Ethernet (RJ45)
- USB (Type A)
- Speakon
Installed Cable Test Mode
For testing installed cables, connect one end of the cable to an "OUT" port on the CT200 and the other end to the corresponding "IN" port on the installed system. This mode helps verify continuity and correct wiring in permanent installations.
Test Tone Mode
The CT200 can generate test tones at three selectable levels: +4 dBu, -10 dBV, and -50 dBV/MIC. Use the TONE LEVEL switch to select the desired output level. Connect the CT200's "OUT" port to the input of the device you wish to test (e.g., mixer, amplifier) to verify signal path and identify potential issues.
Maintenance
Keep the Behringer CT200 clean and dry. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures or humidity. Regularly check the battery compartment for corrosion and replace batteries as needed. Store the unit in a protective case when not in use to prevent physical damage.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions
- "1/4" TS cables test shorted": The CT200 is designed to test TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) 1/4" cables. For TS (Tip-Sleeve) mono 1/4" cables, the tester may indicate a short between the ring and sleeve, which is normal for a TS cable as it lacks a ring connection. To accurately test TS cables, use a 1/4" TS to RCA adapter and connect it to the RCA inputs on the side of the tester.
- Intermittent Readings: If the "INTERMITTENT" light flickers or other lights change when wiggling the cable, it indicates a loose connection or internal break within the cable. This cable should be repaired or replaced.
- No Lights / Unit Not Powering On: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace batteries if necessary.
- "CROSSED", "SHORTED", or "OPEN" Indicators: These lights indicate specific wiring faults. "CROSSED" means wires are incorrectly connected between pins. "SHORTED" means two or more wires are making unintended contact. "OPEN" means a wire has a break and is not making a connection.
