1. Introduction

The COBY DTV-800 is a digital converter box designed to receive over-the-air digital television broadcasts. It allows older analog televisions or digital TVs without a built-in digital tuner to access digital terrestrial television content. Beyond its primary function, the DTV-800 also offers multimedia capabilities, enabling playback of movies, music, and photos from a USB device, and includes a recording function for your favorite programs.

2. Safety Information

  • Power Supply: Use only the specified power adapter. Ensure the voltage matches the requirements of the device.
  • Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Ensure adequate airflow around the unit to prevent overheating.
  • Water and Moisture: Do not expose the unit to rain, moisture, or dripping/splashing liquids. Keep away from water sources.
  • Cleaning: Disconnect from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
  • Placement: Place the unit on a stable, flat surface. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service this product yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

4.1. Top View

The rear panel of the DTV-800 provides all necessary connections for your antenna and television:

  • ANT IN: Connect your digital antenna here.
  • ANT OUT: Connect this to your TV's antenna input if you wish to use your TV's analog tuner for analog channels (if available).
  • HD 1080 (HDMI): High-Definition Multimedia Interface output for connecting to modern TVs for best picture quality.
  • VIDEO (Yellow RCA): Composite video output for connecting to older TVs.
  • L (White RCA): Left audio output for composite connection.
  • R (Red RCA): Right audio output for composite connection.
  • DC 5V/2A: Power input for the included power adapter.

4.3. Front Panel

The front panel typically features a power indicator light, an IR receiver for the remote control, and a USB port for media playback and recording.

5. Setup

5.1. Connecting the Antenna

  1. Connect your digital antenna to the ANT IN port on the rear panel of the DTV-800.
  2. If you also want to connect your TV's analog tuner, connect a coaxial cable from the ANT OUT port on the DTV-800 to the antenna input on your television.

5.2. Connecting to Your Television

Choose one of the following connection methods:

HDMI Connection (Recommended for Digital TVs)

  1. Connect an HDMI cable (not included) from the HD 1080 (HDMI) port on the DTV-800 to an available HDMI input on your television.
  2. Select the corresponding HDMI input on your TV using your TV's remote control.

RCA Composite Connection (for Analog TVs)

  1. Connect the yellow RCA cable from the VIDEO port on the DTV-800 to the yellow video input on your television.
  2. Connect the white RCA cable from the L port on the DTV-800 to the white audio input on your television.
  3. Connect the red RCA cable from the R port on the DTV-800 to the red audio input on your television.
  4. Select the corresponding AV input (e.g., Video 1, AV1) on your TV using your TV's remote control.

5.3. Connecting Power

  1. Connect the included power adapter to the DC 5V/2A port on the rear of the DTV-800.
  2. Plug the other end of the power adapter into a wall outlet.

5.4. Initial Channel Scan

After connecting all cables and powering on the unit, you will need to perform an initial channel scan to find available digital channels.

  1. Turn on your TV and the DTV-800.
  2. Using the DTV-800 remote, navigate to the Menu.
  3. Select Channel Search or Auto Scan.
  4. Confirm to start the scan. The DTV-800 will search for all available digital channels in your area. This process may take several minutes.
  5. Once the scan is complete, the unit will save the channels and tune to the first available channel.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Basic TV Viewing

  • Power On/Off: Press the POWER button on the remote control to turn the unit on or off.
  • Channel Selection: Use the CH+/CH- buttons or the number pad on the remote to change channels.
  • Volume Control: Use the VOL+/VOL- buttons on the remote to adjust the volume.
  • Mute: Press the MUTE button to temporarily silence the audio.

6.2. USB Media Playback

The DTV-800 allows you to play various media files (movies, music, photos) from a USB storage device.

  1. Insert your USB flash drive into the USB port on the front panel of the DTV-800.
  2. Press the MEDIA or USB button on the remote control, or navigate to the Multimedia section through the main menu.
  3. Select the desired media type (Movie, Music, Photo) and browse your files.
  4. Use the navigation buttons and OK button on the remote to select and play files.

6.3. Program Recording (PVR)

You can record digital TV programs directly to a connected USB storage device.

  • Instant Recording: While watching a program, press the REC button on the remote control to start recording immediately. Press STOP to end the recording.
  • Scheduled Recording: Access the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) or Timer menu to set up recordings for future programs. You will need to specify the channel, start time, end time, and date.

6.4. Parental Control

The DTV-800 allows you to restrict access to certain channels based on content ratings.

  1. Access the Parental Control section in the main menu.
  2. You may be prompted to enter a password (default is often 0000 or 1234).
  3. Set content ratings or lock specific channels as desired.

6.5. Auto Power Off

The DTV-800 features an auto power-off function to conserve energy. This can typically be configured in the system settings menu, allowing you to set a timer after which the unit will automatically power down if inactive.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Ensure the unit is unplugged before cleaning. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
  • Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation slots are not blocked by dust or debris.
  • Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, unplug it from the power outlet and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
