Setup

Before operating the drill, ensure proper setup and assembly. The machine is heavy (40 kg net weight), so handle with care and ensure it is placed on a stable, level surface.

1. Unpacking and Placement

  • Carefully unpack all components. Verify that all parts listed in the packing list are present.
  • Place the drill on a solid, level workbench or floor. The robust base with T-slots provides excellent stability.

2. Assembly

  • Attach the steel column securely to the base.
  • Mount the drilling head assembly onto the column.
  • Install the work table onto the column. Ensure it can be freely adjusted and locked into position.
  • Attach the three-arm crank handle for spindle feed.
  • Install the self-centering chuck (3 to 16 mm, B16) onto the spindle taper (MK2/MT2). Ensure it is firmly seated.
  • Position and adjust the tiltable protective screen for optimal safety.

3. Electrical Connection

This machine operates on 400 V - 50 Hz. Ensure your power supply matches these requirements and that the connection is made by a qualified electrician, adhering to all local electrical codes and safety regulations.

  • Connect the power cable to a suitable 400V outlet.
  • Verify that the emergency stop button and power switch are easily accessible.

Operating Instructions

Follow these instructions for safe and effective operation of your pillar drill.

1. Safety First

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and suitable work gloves.
  • Ensure the protective screen is properly positioned before starting the drill.
  • Secure the workpiece firmly to the work table using clamps or a vice. Never hold the workpiece by hand.
  • Keep hands and loose clothing away from rotating parts.

2. Adjusting the Work Table

  • The work table can be tilted from -45° to +45° for angled drilling. Loosen the locking mechanism, adjust the angle, and re-tighten.
  • The table can also rotate 360° around the column. Loosen the locking mechanism, rotate to the desired position, and re-tighten.
  • Adjust the height of the table by loosening its clamp on the column, moving it up or down, and then re-tightening.

3. Setting Spindle Speed

The drill offers 5 spindle speeds ranging from 500 to 2500 RPM. The speed is adjusted by changing the belt position on the pulleys inside the head. Refer to the speed chart (usually located inside the belt cover) for recommended speeds based on material and drill bit size.

  • Turn off and unplug the machine before opening the belt cover.
  • Adjust the belt to the desired pulley combination.
  • Close the belt cover securely before restoring power.

4. Setting Drilling Depth

The drilling depth can be precisely controlled using the depth scale and adjustable depth indicator.

  • Lower the drill bit until it just touches the workpiece.
  • Set the depth indicator to zero on the scale.
  • Adjust the depth stop to the desired drilling depth. This will prevent the drill from going deeper than intended.

5. Drilling Operation

  • Ensure the drill bit is securely installed in the chuck.
  • Turn on the drill using the power switch.
  • Slowly lower the drill bit into the workpiece using the three-arm crank handle. Apply steady, even pressure.
  • Once the desired depth is reached (indicated by the depth stop), retract the drill bit from the workpiece.
  • Turn off the drill and wait for the spindle to come to a complete stop before removing the workpiece or making adjustments.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Holzmann SB 3116RMN Pillar Drill.

1. Cleaning

  • After each use, clean the machine thoroughly. Remove all chips and debris from the work table, column, and base.
  • Use a brush or vacuum cleaner; never use compressed air as it can spread debris into moving parts.
  • Wipe down all surfaces with a clean, dry cloth.

2. Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil to the polished steel column and other moving parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Check the spindle and quill for smooth movement and lubricate as needed.

3. Inspection

  • Regularly inspect the power cord for any signs of damage.
  • Check all nuts, bolts, and fasteners for tightness. Re-tighten if necessary.
  • Inspect the drive belt for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Ensure the protective screen is intact and functions correctly.

4. Storage

When not in use, store the drill in a clean, dry environment, protected from dust and moisture.
