5. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of your subwoofer. It is highly recommended to have the subwoofer installed by a qualified professional.

5.1 Enclosure Recommendations

The RS-X-08 is designed to perform well in both sealed and vented enclosures:

  • Vented Box: Approximately 18 liters (0.64 cubic feet).
  • Sealed Box: Approximately 12 liters (0.42 cubic feet).

Ensure the enclosure is robust, airtight (for sealed), and properly braced to prevent rattles and vibrations.

5.2 Wiring Connections

The RS-X-08 has a 4 Ohm nominal impedance. Connect the subwoofer to a suitable amplifier capable of delivering the required power (250-375 Watts RMS) at a 4 Ohm load.

  • Connect the positive (+) terminal of the subwoofer to the positive (+) output of the amplifier.
  • Connect the negative (-) terminal of the subwoofer to the negative (-) output of the amplifier.
  • Use high-quality speaker wire of appropriate gauge (e.g., 12-14 gauge) for runs up to 10 feet.

5.3 Mounting

The subwoofer requires an installation diameter of 183 mm (7.20 inches) and an installation depth of 104 mm (4.09 inches). Ensure sufficient clearance behind the mounting surface for proper ventilation and magnet clearance.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, follow these guidelines for optimal operation:

  • Break-in Period: Allow a break-in period of approximately 20-30 hours of normal listening before pushing the subwoofer to its limits. This allows the suspension components to loosen up and perform optimally.
  • Gain Setting: Set the amplifier gain correctly to match the output voltage of your head unit. Incorrect gain settings can lead to distortion and potential damage to the subwoofer.
  • Crossover Settings: Use a low-pass filter (LPF) on your amplifier or head unit to send only low frequencies to the subwoofer. A typical LPF setting for an 8-inch subwoofer might be between 60Hz and 100Hz, depending on your system and preferences.
  • Subsonic Filter: If your amplifier has a subsonic filter, enable it and set it slightly below your enclosure's tuning frequency (for vented enclosures) or around 25-30Hz (for sealed enclosures) to protect the subwoofer from over-excursion at very low frequencies.
  • Volume Control: Avoid prolonged listening at maximum volume levels, especially if you notice any distortion. Distortion indicates that the amplifier or subwoofer is being overdriven.

7. Maintenance

The Gladen RS-X-08 subwoofer requires minimal maintenance:

  • Keep the subwoofer clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Avoid spilling liquids on the subwoofer.
  • Do not apply excessive pressure to the cone or surround.
