2. Setup

Before operating your T.I.P. SPF 250 F Sand Filter System, proper setup is crucial. Follow these steps carefully to ensure correct installation and optimal performance.

2.1. Filter Media Installation

  1. Ensure the filter tank is clean and free of debris.
  2. Carefully pour the recommended amount of filter sand (13 kg) or place BEASAN filter balls into the filter tank. Ensure the central pipe is not obstructed during this process.

2.2. Component Assembly

  1. Attach the 4-way valve to the top of the filter tank, ensuring a secure and watertight seal.
  2. Connect the recirculation pump to the filter tank. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.
  3. Connect the pre-filter to the pump's suction side. The pre-filter is designed for coarse filtration.

2.3. Hose Connections

  1. Connect the pool's skimmer line to the pump's inlet.
  2. Connect the pump's outlet to the 'PUMP' port on the 4-way valve.
  3. Connect the 'RETURN' port on the 4-way valve to the pool's return line.
  4. Connect the 'WASTE' port on the 4-way valve to a suitable drainage area.
  5. Ensure all hose connections are secured with clamps to prevent leaks. The SPF series connections are compatible with Ø 32/38 mm pool hoses.

3. Operating the 4-Way Valve

The 4-way valve is central to the operation of your sand filter system, allowing you to switch between different modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage.

4-Way Valve Diagram

Image 3.1: Diagram of the 4-way valve showing its various settings: Filtration, Backwash, Rinse, and Winterization.

Valve Positions:

  • FILTRATION: This is the standard operating mode for daily pool water cleaning. Water is drawn from the pool, passes through the filter media, and is returned clean to the pool.
  • BACKWASH (RÜCKSPÜLEN): Used to clean the filter media. Water flows in reverse through the filter, dislodging trapped debris, which is then sent out through the 'WASTE' port. Perform backwash when the manometer indicates high pressure (typically 0.2-0.3 bar above normal operating pressure).
  • RINSE (NACHSPÜLEN): After backwashing, this mode settles the filter media and flushes any remaining dirt from the valve and lines to the 'WASTE' port. Run for 30-60 seconds after each backwash.
  • WINTERIZATION (WINTERSTELLUNG): This position is used to relieve pressure on the valve's internal seals during periods of non-use, especially during winter.

Monitor the integrated manometer regularly. An increase in pressure indicates that the filter media is becoming clogged and requires backwashing.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your T.I.P. SPF 250 F Sand Filter System.

4.1. Backwashing and Rinsing

  1. Turn off the pump.
  2. Set the 4-way valve to 'BACKWASH'.
  3. Turn on the pump and run until the water flowing from the 'WASTE' port is clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
  4. Turn off the pump.
  5. Set the 4-way valve to 'RINSE'.
  6. Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
  7. Turn off the pump.
  8. Set the 4-way valve back to 'FILTRATION'.
  9. Turn on the pump to resume normal operation.

4.2. Pre-filter Cleaning

The pre-filter should be checked and cleaned regularly, especially if you notice reduced flow or increased pump noise.

  1. Turn off the pump and disconnect it from power.
  2. Close any necessary valves to prevent water flow.
  3. Unscrew the transparent lid of the pre-filter.
  4. Remove the filter basket and clean it thoroughly under running water.
  5. Reinsert the basket and securely fasten the lid.

4.3. Winterization

Proper winterization is essential to protect your system from freezing damage.

  1. Perform a thorough backwash and rinse cycle.
  2. Drain all water from the filter tank and pump by opening the drainage plugs.
  3. Disconnect all hoses and store them properly.
  4. Set the 4-way valve to 'WINTERIZATION' to relieve pressure on the seals.
  5. Store the pump and filter tank in a dry, frost-free location.

5. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your sand filter system.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low water flow from return jetsClogged filter media; Clogged pre-filter; Air in system; Pump impeller obstructed.Perform backwash and rinse; Clean pre-filter basket; Bleed air from system; Inspect pump impeller for debris.
Cloudy pool waterInsufficient filtration time; Dirty filter media; Incorrect chemical balance; Filter media needs replacement.Increase filtration duration; Backwash and rinse filter; Test and adjust pool chemicals; Replace filter sand/balls.
Pump is noisy or vibrating excessivelyAir leak in suction line; Pump not primed; Debris in pump impeller; Worn bearings.Check all suction line connections for leaks; Ensure pump is filled with water; Clean impeller; Contact qualified technician for bearing replacement.
Water leaking from valve or connectionsLoose connections; Damaged O-rings/gaskets; Cracked housing (e.g., due to freezing).Tighten all connections; Inspect and replace damaged O-rings/gaskets; If housing is cracked, replacement of the affected part may be necessary. Ensure proper winterization to prevent freezing.
