Setup

1. Charging the Battery Pack

The Metabo BS 14.4 uses a 14.4V Li-ion battery pack. Before initial use, fully charge the battery. Connect the charger to a power outlet and insert the battery pack into the charger. The charging indicator on the battery pack will show the charging status. A full charge typically takes approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the charger model.

2. Attaching/Removing the Battery Pack

  1. To Attach: Align the battery pack with the base of the drill handle and slide it in until it clicks securely into place.
  2. To Remove: Press the battery release buttons (usually on the sides of the battery pack) and slide the battery pack out of the handle.

3. Installing/Removing Drill Bits or Screwdriver Bits

The drill features a keyless chuck with a capacity of 1-10 mm (1/32 - 3/8 inches).

  1. To Install: Rotate the chuck counter-clockwise until the jaws are open wide enough to insert the bit. Insert the bit fully into the chuck. Rotate the chuck clockwise to tighten the jaws firmly around the bit. Ensure the bit is centered and secure.
  2. To Remove: Rotate the chuck counter-clockwise to loosen the jaws and pull the bit out.

4. Attaching the Belt Hook

The handy belt hook can be fixed on either the right or left side of the tool without tools. Simply align the hook with the designated slot on the drill body and push it into place until it locks securely.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Speed Control

The drill is activated by pressing the trigger switch. The speed is variable and controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the trigger. Pressing lightly results in lower speed, while pressing fully results in maximum speed (0-400 RPM in first gear, 0-1500 RPM in second gear).

2. Forward/Reverse Rotation

A forward/reverse switch is located above the trigger. Push the switch to the left for forward rotation (for drilling and screwdriving) and to the right for reverse rotation (for removing screws). Ensure the switch is in the neutral (center) position when not in use to prevent accidental starting.

3. Torque Setting

The torque adjustment ring is located behind the chuck. Rotate the ring to select the desired torque setting. The drill offers an adjustable torque range of 0.5 - 4.5 Nm (4 - 40 in-lbs) for screwdriving, and a drill mode for maximum torque (up to 40 Nm / 354 in-lbs hard, 20 Nm / 177 in-lbs soft) for drilling applications. Use lower torque settings for smaller screws and softer materials, and higher settings or drill mode for larger screws and harder materials.

4. Gear Selection

A gear selector switch is located on top of the drill.

  • Gear 1 (Low Speed, High Torque): Ideal for heavy-duty screwdriving and drilling large holes in tough materials.
  • Gear 2 (High Speed, Lower Torque): Suitable for fast drilling of smaller holes and light-duty screwdriving.
Always select the appropriate gear before starting the operation.

5. Integrated Working Light

The drill is equipped with an integrated LED working light that illuminates the contact area when the trigger is pressed, improving visibility in dimly lit environments.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Metabo drill.

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the tool with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Keep ventilation openings clear of dust and debris.
  • Battery Care: Store battery packs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Do not store fully discharged batteries for extended periods.
  • Chuck Maintenance: Periodically clean the chuck jaws to ensure proper gripping of bits.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the power tool for any signs of damage, loose screws, or worn parts. If any damage is found, have it repaired by a qualified service technician.
