HM Digital PH-80
HM Digital PH-80 pH/Temperature Meter Instruction Manual
Model: PH-80
Brand: HM Digital
Introduction
The HM Digital PH-80 is a handheld, water-resistant pH and temperature meter designed for accurate measurement of water quality. It features automatic temperature compensation (ATC) and a one-touch digital calibration system, making it suitable for various applications including hydroponics, gardening, aquariums, pools, spas, and drinking water analysis.
Understanding pH
pH, an abbreviation for 'hydrogen's potential', indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. The pH scale typically ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity (basic). For example, acidic water (pH below 6) can be detrimental to plant and aquatic life. The ideal pH for pool water is generally between 7.2 and 7.4.
Product Overview

Key Features
- Measures pH and Temperature simultaneously.
- Water-resistant design.
- One-touch automatic digital calibration.
- Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for accurate readings.
- Auto-Off function to conserve battery life.
- Data-Hold function to freeze readings for easy recording.
Package Contents
The PH-80 meter typically includes the following accessories:
- HM Digital PH-80 pH/Temperature Meter
- Protective cap
- Batteries (pre-installed or separate)
- Storage solution
- pH 7.0 buffer solution (for calibration)
Setup
1. Battery Installation
The PH-80 requires 3 LR44 batteries. If not pre-installed, open the battery compartment (usually located at the top) and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
2. Initial Preparation
Before first use, remove the protective cap from the electrode. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and gently blot dry with a clean tissue. Ensure the electrode is moist with storage solution when not in use to maintain its longevity.
Operating Instructions
1. Turning On/Off
Press the POWER button to turn the meter on or off. The meter will automatically shut off after a period of inactivity to save battery life.
2. Taking a Measurement
- Ensure the meter is clean and calibrated.
- Immerse the electrode into the sample solution up to the maximum immersion level indicated on the meter. Do not immerse the entire meter.
- Gently stir the meter to remove air bubbles and allow the reading to stabilize.
- The pH and temperature readings will be displayed on the LCD screen.
- To hold a reading, press the HOLD button. Press again to release.
- After use, rinse the electrode with distilled water and replace the protective cap with a few drops of storage solution.
3. Temperature Unit Selection
The PH-80 can display temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit. Refer to the specific instructions for your model to switch between units, usually by pressing the TEMP/CAL button while the meter is off, then pressing POWER to confirm.
Calibration
The PH-80 is factory calibrated to pH 7.0. Regular calibration ensures accuracy. It supports one-touch digital calibration at pH 4.0, pH 7.0, and pH 10.0.
- Prepare the buffer solutions (pH 4.0, pH 7.0, pH 10.0) in separate clean containers.
- Turn on the meter and rinse the electrode with distilled water.
- Immerse the electrode into the pH 7.0 buffer solution.
- Press and hold the TEMP/CAL button until "CAL" appears on the display. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer solution and calibrate itself.
- Once calibration is complete, the meter will display "END" and return to measurement mode.
- Repeat the process for pH 4.0 and pH 10.0 buffer solutions if higher accuracy is required across the full range. Always calibrate to pH 7.0 first, then to 4.0 or 10.0 depending on your typical measurement range.
Note: Always use fresh buffer solutions for calibration. Discard used buffer solutions after calibration.
Maintenance
Electrode Care
- Always keep the electrode moist. Store the meter with a few drops of pH electrode storage solution in the protective cap. Never store the electrode dry or in distilled water.
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water before and after each use.
- If the electrode becomes dirty or readings become sluggish, clean it gently with a soft brush and a mild detergent solution, then rinse thoroughly.
Battery Replacement
When the display dims or the meter fails to turn on, replace the LR44 batteries. Ensure the battery compartment is sealed properly after replacement to maintain water resistance.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate readings | Uncalibrated meter, dirty electrode, expired buffer solution, low batteries. | Calibrate the meter, clean the electrode, use fresh buffer solutions, replace batteries. |
| Slow response time | Dry or contaminated electrode. | Rehydrate the electrode in storage solution for several hours, then clean and recalibrate. |
| Meter does not turn on | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Replace batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| "Err" or "Lo" message | Electrode issue, out of range reading, or calibration error. | Check electrode connection, ensure sample is within pH range, recalibrate. If problem persists, electrode may need replacement. |
