4. Setup

Before connecting the LEDs, ensure you understand their polarity and voltage requirements to prevent damage.

4.1 Polarity Identification

  • The CHANZON 3mm Red & Blue LED is a Common Anode (CA) type.
  • The longest leg is the Common Anode (+).
  • The two shorter legs are the Cathodes (-) for the Red and Blue colors, respectively.

4.2 Current Limiting Resistor Calculation

LEDs require a current-limiting resistor in series to prevent overcurrent and damage. The resistor value can be calculated using Ohm's Law:

R = (Vs - Vf) / I

  • R = Resistor value in Ohms (Ω)
  • Vs = Supply Voltage (V)
  • Vf = Forward Voltage of the LED (Red: 2V-2.2V, Blue: 3V-3.2V)
  • I = Desired Forward Current (typically 20mA or 0.02A)

Note: Since the Red and Blue LEDs have different forward voltages, you will need separate current-limiting resistors for each color if you intend to light them independently from the same supply voltage.

4.3 Connection to Circuit

  1. Identify the Common Anode (+) and the Cathodes (-) for Red and Blue.
  2. Connect the Common Anode (longest leg) to the positive (+) terminal of your power supply.
  3. Connect a calculated current-limiting resistor in series with each Cathode (shorter legs).
  4. Connect the other end of each resistor to the negative (-) terminal of your power supply or a control pin (e.g., from an Arduino) to switch the LED color on/off.

5. Operating Instructions

Once properly connected with the correct current-limiting resistors, apply power to your circuit.

  • To illuminate the Red LED, ensure the Red Cathode is connected to ground (or a low signal from a microcontroller) through its resistor.
  • To illuminate the Blue LED, ensure the Blue Cathode is connected to ground (or a low signal from a microcontroller) through its resistor.
  • To turn off a color, disconnect its Cathode from ground (or set the microcontroller pin to high impedance/output high).

Caution: Applying voltage directly to the LED without a current-limiting resistor will cause immediate damage to the LED.

6. Maintenance

These LEDs are generally maintenance-free under normal operating conditions.

  • Storage: Store LEDs in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep them in their original packaging until ready for use to prevent lead bending and static discharge.
  • Handling: Handle LEDs by their body, not by the leads, to avoid bending or breaking. Avoid touching the lens surface to prevent smudges that could affect light output.
  • Cleaning: If necessary, gently wipe the LED lens with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

7. Troubleshooting

  • LED not lighting up:
    • Check polarity: Ensure the Common Anode (longest leg) is connected to positive and the correct Cathode (shorter leg) is connected to negative through a resistor.
    • Verify power supply: Confirm the power supply is providing the correct voltage.
    • Inspect resistor: Make sure the current-limiting resistor is correctly calculated and connected. An open circuit or incorrect value will prevent the LED from lighting.
    • Test LED: Try the LED in a known working circuit or with a simple battery and appropriate resistor to confirm it is not faulty.
  • Incorrect brightness or color:
    • Resistor value: Ensure the correct resistor value is used for the specific color (Red or Blue) as their forward voltages differ.
    • Current: Verify that the LED is receiving approximately 20mA of current. Lower current will result in dimmer light.
    • Supply voltage: Fluctuations in supply voltage can affect brightness.
  • LED flickering:
    • Loose connections: Check all connections for proper contact.
    • Unstable power supply: Ensure your power supply is stable and not fluctuating.

8. Safety Information

  • Always use appropriate current-limiting resistors with LEDs to prevent overcurrent and damage to the LED or power source.
  • Avoid direct, prolonged eye exposure to the illuminated LED, especially the blue light, as it can be very bright.
  • Do not exceed the specified forward voltage and current ratings.
  • Keep out of reach of children. These are small electronic components and can pose a choking hazard.
  • Ensure proper ventilation if integrating into an enclosed circuit, although these low-power LEDs generate minimal heat.
