4. Setup
4.1 Attaching the Lens
- Remove the rear lens cap and the camera body cap.
- Align the red dot on the lens barrel (Lens Mount Index) with the corresponding red dot on your Canon camera body.
- Insert the lens into the camera mount and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.
4.2 Detaching the Lens
- While holding down the lens release button on the camera body, turn the lens counter-clockwise until it stops.
- Remove the lens from the camera mount.
- Attach the front and rear lens caps to protect the lens elements.
4.3 Attaching the Lens Hood
Align the red dot on the lens hood with the white dot on the lens barrel. Push the hood onto the lens and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place. To reverse, turn counter-clockwise while pressing the release button on the hood.
5. Operating the Lens
5.1 Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF)
- Set the AF/MF switch to AF for automatic focusing. The camera will focus when the shutter button is half-pressed.
- Set the AF/MF switch to MF for manual focusing. Rotate the Focus Ring to adjust focus. This lens features Full-Time Manual Focus (FTM), allowing manual adjustment even in AF mode without switching.
5.2 Vibration Compensation (VC)
- Set the VC switch to ON to activate image stabilization. This helps reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially in low light or when shooting handheld.
- Set the VC switch to OFF when using a tripod or in situations where stabilization is not required.
5.3 Focus Limiter
Use the Focus Limiter Switch to optimize autofocus performance based on your shooting distance:
- For general photography, set to FULL.
- For subjects further than 0.5 meters, set to 0.5m - ∞.
- For extreme close-up macro shots (0.3m to 0.5m), set to 0.3m - 0.5m. This prevents the lens from hunting for focus across its entire range, speeding up acquisition.
5.4 Macro Photography (1:1 Magnification)
This lens offers true 1:1 life-size macro magnification, allowing you to capture intricate details of small subjects. For best results in macro photography:
- Consider using a tripod to minimize camera shake, even with VC enabled, for critical sharpness.
- Utilize the 0.3m - 0.5m focus limiter setting for faster and more precise autofocus in the macro range.
- For extremely precise focus, switch to MF and fine-tune using the focus ring.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe dust and smudges from lens surfaces. For stubborn marks, use a lens cleaning solution specifically designed for optical glass. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Storage: Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use lens caps when not in use to protect the front and rear elements.
- Moisture and Dust: While the lens features moisture-proof and dust-resistant construction, avoid exposing it to heavy rain or dusty environments for prolonged periods.
7. Troubleshooting
- Autofocus is slow or hunts:
- Ensure sufficient light is available for the autofocus system.
- Check the Focus Limiter Switch setting; select a narrower range if applicable.
- Clean the lens contacts on both the lens and camera body.
- Images are blurry:
- Ensure the VC switch is ON if shooting handheld.
- Check your shutter speed; use a faster speed or a tripod if necessary.
- Verify that the lens is securely attached to the camera body.
- Lens not recognized by camera:
- Remove and reattach the lens, ensuring proper alignment and a secure click.
- Clean the electronic contacts on both the lens and camera body.
- Ensure your camera's firmware is up to date.
