3. Setup and Assembly
Assembly requires patience and attention to detail. It is recommended to have an adult supervise or assist with the setup process.
3.1 Unpacking and Preparation
- Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Lay out all parts on a clean, flat surface to ensure nothing is overlooked.
- Identify each drum, cymbal, stand, and piece of hardware.
3.2 Bass Drum Assembly
- Attach the bass drum legs (spurs) to the bass drum shell. Ensure they are securely tightened.
- Mount the bass drum pedal to the hoop of the bass drum. The pedal should be positioned for comfortable foot operation.

3.3 Tom-Tom Mounting
- Attach the rack tom-toms to the bass drum using the provided mounting hardware. Adjust their angle and position for comfortable reach.
- The floor tom-tom typically stands on its own legs. Attach these legs and adjust the height.

3.4 Snare Drum Assembly
- Assemble the snare drum stand.
- Place the snare drum onto the stand and adjust its height and angle.
3.5 Cymbal Assembly (Hi-Hat and Crash)
- Assemble the hi-hat stand and attach the 8" hi-hat cymbals. Ensure the top cymbal moves freely when the pedal is pressed.
- Assemble the crash cymbal stand and mount the 10" crash cymbal.
3.6 Throne Assembly
- Assemble the drum throne (seat).
- Adjust the height of the throne to allow the drummer to comfortably reach all drums and pedals.
3.7 Drum Head Tuning
- Use the provided drum key to tighten the tension rods around the drum heads.
- Tighten rods gradually in a star pattern to ensure even tension across the head. This helps achieve optimal sound and prevents damage to the drum head.

4. Operating Instructions
Once assembled, the RockJam RJ105-MB Junior Drum Set is ready for use. Here are some basic operating guidelines:
- Seating Position: Adjust the drum throne height so that your knees are slightly below your hips, allowing your feet to comfortably reach the bass drum and hi-hat pedals.
- Holding Drumsticks: Hold the drumsticks loosely but firmly, allowing for rebound and control. There are various grips; experiment to find what is most comfortable.
- Striking Drums: Strike the center of the drum heads for a full, resonant sound. Experiment with striking closer to the rim for different tones.
- Cymbal Technique: Strike cymbals with a glancing blow rather than a direct hit to produce a sustained sound and prevent damage.
- Pedal Use: Use the bass drum pedal to operate the bass drum beater. Use the hi-hat pedal to open and close the hi-hat cymbals, creating different sounds.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance will extend the life and performance of your drum set.
- Cleaning: Wipe down drums and cymbals with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove dust and fingerprints. For metallic parts, a slightly damp cloth followed by a dry one can be used. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Hardware Check: Periodically check all bolts, screws, and wing nuts on stands and mounts to ensure they are tight. Loose hardware can lead to instability and damage.
- Drum Head Care: Drum heads will wear over time. If a drum head becomes excessively dented, torn, or loses its tone, it may need replacement.
- Cymbal Care: Avoid dropping cymbals or striking them with excessive force, as this can cause cracks. Clean cymbals gently to maintain their shine.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the drum set in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes.
6. Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Drums sound dull or lifeless | Loose drum heads; uneven tension | Use the drum key to tighten tension rods evenly. |
| Wobbly stands or components | Loose bolts or wing nuts | Tighten all hardware connections securely. |
| Bass drum pedal feels stiff or squeaks | Lack of lubrication; debris in mechanism | Apply a small amount of lubricant to moving parts. Clean any visible debris. |
| Cymbals produce a short, choked sound | Cymbal stand too tight; improper striking technique | Ensure cymbal is not clamped too tightly on the stand. Review striking technique. |
