Introduction
The Teknetics T2 Classic is a high-performance, multi-purpose professional-grade metal detector designed for various treasure hunting activities, including coin shooting, relic hunting, and gold prospecting. Known for its advanced electronic technology, functional design, lightweight construction, and perfect balance, the T2 Classic offers exceptional performance. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your metal detector to ensure optimal use and longevity.
Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps to assemble your Teknetics T2 Classic metal detector:
- Attach the Search Coil: Secure the 11-inch waterproof search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and nut. Ensure it is firmly attached but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Stems: Slide the lower stem into the middle stem, and then the middle stem into the upper stem. Adjust the length to a comfortable position that allows the search coil to be parallel to the ground when you are standing upright.
- Install the Armrest: Attach the armrest to the upper stem. Adjust its position for comfortable use, ensuring your forearm rests securely.
- Mount the Control Housing: Secure the control housing to the upper stem. Ensure all cables are routed neatly and securely to prevent snagging or damage.
- Install Batteries: The T2 Classic requires four AA batteries. Open the battery compartment, insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators, and close the compartment securely. The detector is designed for approximately 40 hours of use on a fresh set of batteries.

Controls Overview

Figure 3: Teknetics T2 Classic Control Panel. Displays target ID, sensitivity, hum level, ground balance, discrimination, and number of tones.
- LCD Display: Provides visual information including target ID, depth, battery strength, and current settings.
- SETTINGS Knob: Used to adjust various parameters such as sensitivity, hum level, and ground balance.
- MENU Button: Navigates through the different menu options and settings.
- Trigger Switch: Located on the handle, this switch allows for quick ground balancing (pull back) and pinpointing (push forward).
Basic Operation
- Power On: Press and hold the power button (usually integrated with the SETTINGS knob or a dedicated button) to turn on the detector.
- Select Mode: The T2 Classic typically offers an 'All Metal' mode for maximum depth and sensitivity, and a 'Discrimination' mode to filter out unwanted metals (like iron). Use the MENU button to switch between modes.
- Adjust Sensitivity: In 'All Metal' mode, adjust the SETTINGS knob to increase or decrease sensitivity. Higher sensitivity can detect smaller or deeper targets but may also pick up more ground noise. A common setting for good performance is around 95, depending on ground conditions.
- Set Hum Level: Adjust the hum level using the SETTINGS knob to minimize background noise. A setting of 0 is often recommended for quiet operation.
- Ground Balance: This is crucial for stable operation. To ground balance, pull the trigger switch back and pump the search coil up and down over a clear patch of ground. The detector will automatically adjust to the soil conditions. For manual ground balancing, adjust the SETTINGS knob while pumping the coil.
- Discrimination: In 'Discrimination' mode, use the SETTINGS knob to set the discrimination level. This allows the detector to ignore certain types of metal, such as iron, indicated by their target ID numbers.
- Pinpoint Function: Once a target is detected, push the trigger switch forward to activate the pinpoint function. This helps narrow down the exact location of the target before digging.

Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your metal detector.
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals. The control box should be kept dry and clean.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage. Always use fresh, high-quality AA batteries.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Disassemble the stems if necessary for compact storage.
- Coil Protection: Consider using a coil cover to protect the search coil from scratches and impacts.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Teknetics T2 Classic, refer to the following common solutions:
- No Power: Check if the batteries are correctly installed and fully charged. Replace with new batteries if necessary.
- Erratic Signals/False Signals: This can be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from power lines, cell phones, or other electronic devices. Try moving to a different location or reducing sensitivity. Improper ground balance can also cause erratic signals; re-ground balance the detector.
- Weak or No Target Response: Ensure the search coil cable is securely connected to the control box. Check the sensitivity setting; increase it if targets are being missed.
- Inaccurate Target ID: Ground balance the detector regularly, especially when moving to different soil types. Target ID accuracy can be affected by target depth, size, and orientation.
