Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your NETGEAR Powerline 1000 Adapter Kit:

  1. Connect the First Adapter: Plug one Powerline 1000 adapter directly into a wall outlet near your internet router or modem. Do not use a power strip or surge protector, as this can interfere with performance.

  2. Connect to Router: Use one of the provided Ethernet cables to connect the Powerline adapter to an available Ethernet port on your router or modem.
  3. Connect the Second Adapter: Plug the second Powerline 1000 adapter directly into a wall outlet in the room where you want to extend your network. Ensure it is on the same electrical circuit as the first adapter for optimal performance.
  4. Connect Your Device: Use the second Ethernet cable to connect your device (e.g., Smart TV, game console, computer) to the Ethernet port on the second Powerline adapter.

  5. Verify Connection: Wait for the Powerline LED (house icon) on both adapters to turn solid green. This indicates a successful Powerline connection. If the LED is amber, the connection is good but not optimal. If it is red, the connection is poor. If it is off, there is no connection.
  6. Secure the Network (Optional but Recommended): To encrypt your Powerline network, press the Security button on the side of one adapter for two seconds. Within two minutes, press the Security button on the second adapter for two seconds. The Powerline LED will blink during this process and then turn solid green when secured.

Operating the Powerline Adapters

Once set up, your Powerline adapters operate automatically. They create a wired network connection through your home's electrical wiring. No further configuration is typically required for basic operation.

LED Indicators

The adapters feature several LED indicators to provide status information:

  • Power LED (Power icon):
    • Solid Green: Power is on.
    • Blinking Green: Powerline adapter is in power-saving mode.
    • Off: Power is off.
  • Powerline LED (House icon):
    • Solid Green: Good Powerline connection (data rate > 80 Mbps).
    • Solid Amber: Better Powerline connection (data rate > 50 Mbps and < 80 Mbps).
    • Solid Red: Poor Powerline connection (data rate < 50 Mbps).
    • Blinking: Security pairing in progress.
    • Off: No Powerline connection.
  • Ethernet LED (Ethernet port icon):
    • Solid Green: Ethernet link is active.
    • Blinking Green: Data is being transmitted or received.
    • Off: No Ethernet link.

Maintenance

The NETGEAR Powerline 1000 adapters require minimal maintenance. Keep the devices clean and free from dust. Ensure they are plugged directly into wall outlets and not into power strips or surge protectors, as this can degrade performance.

Factory Reset

If you encounter issues or wish to reset the adapter to its default settings, you can perform a factory reset. Locate the Factory Reset button (often a small pinhole or recessed button) on the adapter. Use a paperclip or similar pointed object to press and hold the button for approximately 10 seconds until the LEDs blink. Release the button, and the adapter will reset.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Powerline 1000 Kit, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Powerline Connection (Powerline LED is off):
    • Ensure both adapters are plugged directly into wall outlets, not power strips or surge protectors.
    • Verify that both adapters are on the same electrical circuit. Powerline performance can be affected by circuit breakers or different phases of electrical wiring.
    • Try plugging the adapters into different outlets within the same room or on the same circuit.
    • Perform a factory reset on both adapters and re-pair them.
  • Poor Performance (Powerline LED is Red or Amber):
    • Move the adapters to different wall outlets to find a better connection point.
    • Avoid plugging adapters into outlets that are on different electrical phases or separated by a large number of circuit breakers.
    • Ensure no high-power electrical appliances (e.g., washing machines, refrigerators) are on the same circuit and causing interference.
  • No Internet Connection on Device:
    • Check the Ethernet cable connection between the Powerline adapter and your device.
    • Verify that your router or modem is functioning correctly and has an active internet connection.
    • Ensure the Ethernet LED on the Powerline adapter connected to your device is solid green or blinking.
    • Restart your router, Powerline adapters, and the connected device.
  • Security Pairing Issues:
    • Ensure you press the Security button on the second adapter within two minutes of pressing it on the first.
    • If pairing fails, perform a factory reset on both adapters and try again.
