Introduction

This manual provides instructions for identifying and using your SILCA replacement key for Thule car rack systems. These keys are compatible with various Thule products including roof racks, cargo boxes, carriers, and crossbars that use key codes in the N001-N250 or N001R-N250R range.

Key Identification and Ordering

To ensure you receive the correct replacement key, it is crucial to accurately identify your existing key code. The original key code is typically stamped on the front side of the lock cylinder, near the keyhole, or on your original key.

  1. Locate Your Key Code: Examine your existing Thule lock cylinders or original keys for a stamped code. Thule key codes are usually in the format N001-N250 or N001R-N250R.
  2. Special Cases: Some vehicle brands like BMW, MINI, Volvo, Audi, VW, or Mercedes may use the same code but without the 'N' prefix. Confirm your specific requirement.
  3. Ordering: When ordering, provide only the identified key code. You will receive one code-cut key.

If you require a lock cylinder removal tool, specify the code D1251 or D1252, or simply type CTRL (control key for core/lock/cylinder removal) when ordering.

Key Usage

Once you have received your replacement key, follow these steps to use it with your Thule lock cylinders:

  1. Insert the Key: Gently insert the replacement key into the lock cylinder.
  2. Turn to Unlock/Lock: Turn the key to the appropriate position to unlock or lock your Thule accessory.
  3. Smooth Operation: If the key feels stiff, apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a non-petroleum-based spray lubricant (like garage door spray lube, not WD-40) into the keyhole before re-inserting the key.

Maintenance

  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a non-petroleum-based spray lubricant to the lock cylinders to ensure smooth operation and prevent sticking. Avoid using oil-based lubricants like WD-40 as they can attract dirt and grime.
  • Cleaning: Keep the key and lock cylinder free from dirt, dust, and debris. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the key and the exterior of the lock.
  • Storage: Store spare keys in a safe, memorable location to prevent loss.

Troubleshooting

  • Key Not Turning:
    • Ensure the key is fully inserted into the lock cylinder.
    • Apply lubricant to the lock cylinder as described in the Maintenance section.
    • Verify that the key code matches the lock cylinder.
  • Difficulty Inserting Key:
    • Check for any obstructions in the keyhole.
    • Ensure the key is oriented correctly.
    • Lubricate the keyhole.
  • Lost Key:
    • Refer to the "Key Identification and Ordering" section to order a new key using the code found on your lock cylinder.
