Operating Instructions

To operate your InSinkErator ISE56 food waste disposer:

  1. Remove the sink stopper.
  2. Turn on a medium flow of cold water.
  3. Turn on the disposer switch.
  4. Slowly feed food waste into the disposer opening.
  5. After grinding is complete, turn off the disposer, then turn off the water.

Important: Always use cold water when operating the disposer. Cold water keeps grease and fats in a solid state so they can be flushed away, preventing clogs in your drain pipes.

Acceptable Food Waste:

  • Vegetable scraps (excluding highly fibrous items)
  • Fruit peels and cores
  • Small bones (poultry, fish)
  • Coffee grounds
  • Plate scrapings

Items to Avoid:

  • Large bones (beef, pork)
  • Fibrous materials (celery stalks, corn husks, artichokes, banana peels)
  • Grease, oil, or fat
  • Glass, metal, plastic, or rubber
  • Chemicals or cleaning solutions
  • Oyster or clam shells

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your disposer.

Cleaning Your Disposer:

  • Daily Rinse: After each use, run cold water for a few seconds after the grinding stops to flush out any remaining particles.
  • Deep Cleaning: To clean the grinding chamber and remove odors, grind small pieces of citrus fruit (lemon, orange) with cold water. This helps to clean the internal components and leave a fresh scent.
  • Stubborn Odors: For persistent odors, try grinding a tray of ice cubes. The ice helps to dislodge food particles from the grinding elements.

The Model ISE56 features galvanized steel grind components, designed for durability and effective grinding. Avoid using harsh chemicals or drain cleaners, as these can damage the disposer and plumbing.

Troubleshooting

If your disposer is not functioning correctly, refer to these common issues and solutions:

  • Disposer Hums but Doesn't Grind: This usually indicates a jam. Turn off the disposer and the water. Look into the drain opening with a flashlight. If an object is visible, try to remove it with tongs or pliers. Never use your hand. If no object is visible, insert the disposer wrench (if provided) into the center hole on the bottom of the disposer and turn it back and forth to free the grinding plate. Alternatively, press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposer.
  • Disposer Does Not Turn On: Check if the circuit breaker has tripped or if the reset button on the bottom of the disposer needs to be pressed. Ensure the power switch is in the "ON" position.
  • Leaks: Check all plumbing connections for tightness. Leaks can occur from loose connections at the sink flange, discharge tube, or dishwasher inlet. If the leak is from the disposer housing itself, the unit may require professional service or replacement.
  • Slow Draining/Clogging: This can be caused by disposing of too much fibrous material or insufficient water flow. Ensure you are using plenty of cold water during operation and avoiding prohibited items.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact customer support.
