Braeburn 2220 Programmable Digital Thermostat User Manual

1. Introduction

Welcome to your new Braeburn 2220 Programmable Digital Thermostat. This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your thermostat. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or operate your new thermostat.

2. Safety Information

Observe the following safety precautions during installation and operation:

  • Always turn off power to the heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installing or servicing the thermostat.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and comply with local electrical codes.
  • Do not short (jumper) across terminals on the gas valve or at the system control to test the system. This will damage the thermostat and void the warranty.
  • Use only 2 AA alkaline batteries for power, as specified.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified HVAC technician.

4. Installation

4.1 Wiring

Important: Turn off power to your heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker before beginning installation.

  1. Remove the old thermostat from the wall. Note the wire connections to each terminal.
  2. Label each wire with the corresponding terminal designation from your old thermostat.
  3. Mount the new Braeburn 2220 thermostat base plate to the wall.
  4. Connect the wires to the appropriate terminals on the Braeburn 2220. The terminal designations are: Rh, Rc, Y1, Y2, G, W1/E, W2, O, B, C. Refer to your system's wiring diagram for specific connections.
  5. Ensure all wire connections are tight and secure.

4.2 Mounting

After wiring, carefully attach the thermostat body to the mounted base plate. Ensure it snaps securely into place.

4.3 Initial Power-Up

Insert two fresh AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment. Restore power to your heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker. The thermostat display should illuminate.

5. Operation

5.1 Setting the Time and Day

  1. Press the DAY/TIME button. The hour will flash.
  2. Use the Up/Down Arrows to adjust the hour. Press DAY/TIME again to set the minutes, then the day.
  3. Press RETURN to exit.

5.2 Setting the Temperature

In normal operating mode, use the Up/Down Arrows on the right side of the thermostat to adjust the desired set temperature. The 'SET AT' display will change accordingly.

5.3 System Modes

Use the SYSTEM switch at the bottom left to select your desired operating mode:

  • COOL: The thermostat will operate your cooling system.
  • OFF: Both heating and cooling systems are turned off.
  • HEAT: The thermostat will operate your heating system.
  • EMER (Emergency Heat): For heat pump systems, this mode activates auxiliary heat directly, bypassing the heat pump compressor.

5.4 Fan Modes

Use the FAN switch at the bottom right to select your desired fan operation:

  • AUTO: The fan runs only when the heating or cooling system is actively operating. This is the most common and energy-efficient setting.
  • ON: The fan runs continuously, regardless of whether the heating or cooling system is active.

5.5 Programming Schedule (5/2 Day)

The Braeburn 2220 allows for 5/2 day programming, meaning you can set one schedule for weekdays (Monday-Friday) and another for weekends (Saturday-Sunday), with four program periods per day (Morning, Day, Evening, Night).

  1. Press the PROG button. The display will show the first program period (e.g., 'MORN') and the current set time and temperature for that period.
  2. Use the Up/Down Arrows to adjust the start time for the period.
  3. Press PROG again to move to the temperature setting for that period. Use the Up/Down Arrows to adjust the temperature.
  4. Continue pressing PROG to cycle through all four periods for the weekday schedule, adjusting times and temperatures as needed.
  5. After setting the weekday schedule, the thermostat will automatically move to the weekend schedule. Repeat the process for Saturday and Sunday.
  6. Press RETURN to save and exit programming mode.

5.6 Hold Function

To temporarily or indefinitely override the programmed schedule, press the HOLD button. The thermostat will maintain the current set temperature until the HOLD button is pressed again or the RETURN button is pressed to resume the program.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the two AA alkaline batteries promptly to ensure continuous operation. Open the battery compartment, remove old batteries, and insert new ones, observing polarity.

6.2 Cleaning

Clean the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish or internal components.

6.3 Filter Check Monitor

The thermostat includes a filter check monitor. When the 'FILTER' indicator appears, it's time to check or replace your system's air filter. After servicing the filter, press and hold the PROG button for 3 seconds to reset the monitor.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check batteries and ensure they are inserted correctly. Verify that power to the HVAC system is on.
  • System Not Responding: Ensure the SYSTEM switch is set to COOL or HEAT, not OFF. Check wiring connections. If using batteries, ensure they are fresh.
  • Incorrect Temperature Reading: Ensure the thermostat is not exposed to direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources.
  • Program Not Running: Check if the HOLD function is active. Press HOLD or RETURN to resume the program.
  • Thermostat Malfunction: Press the RESET button (small hole on the left side) with a pointed object to restore factory settings. You will need to re-enter your time, day, and program settings.
