3.3 Initial Configuration (Baud Rate and Flow Control)

The Sena SD1000 features dip switches for hardware configuration of baud rate and hardware flow control. Refer to Figure 2 for the location of these switches.

  • Baud Rate: Adjust the dip switches according to the required baud rate of your connected RS-232 device. Common settings (e.g., 9600, 19.2K, 38.4K, 115.2K) are typically labeled on the device.
  • Hardware Flow Control (H/W Flow Control): Set the corresponding dip switch to ON or OFF based on whether your application requires hardware flow control.

For advanced configuration and software-based settings, use the provided Windows configuration tools. These tools allow for detailed parameter adjustments and profile management.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the SD1000 is physically connected and configured, you can establish a wireless Bluetooth serial connection.

4.1 Bluetooth Pairing

  1. Ensure the SD1000 is powered on and its Bluetooth LED indicator (labeled "Bluetooth" or "Pairing" on the device) is active, indicating it is discoverable or ready for connection.
  2. On your host device (e.g., laptop, desktop with Bluetooth capability), search for available Bluetooth devices.
  3. Select the Sena SD1000 from the list of discovered devices.
  4. If prompted, enter the default Bluetooth PIN (usually "0000" or "1234"). Refer to the device's documentation or the configuration software for the exact PIN.
  5. Once paired, the "Connect" LED on the SD1000 should illuminate, indicating a successful connection.

4.2 Data Transmission

After successful pairing and connection, the SD1000 acts as a transparent serial bridge. Any data sent to the virtual COM port on your host device will be transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth to the connected RS-232 device, and vice-versa.

  • The "RS232-Tx/Rx" LED indicates data transmission activity.
  • The SD1000 supports up to 4 simultaneous Bluetooth connections, allowing multiple host devices to communicate with the serial adapter.
  • For optimal range, ensure a clear line of sight between the SD1000 and the paired Bluetooth device. Use optional patch antennas for extended range requirements up to 1 kilometer.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your Sena SD1000, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the device. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Battery Care: If using battery packs, ensure they are charged regularly and stored properly. Avoid fully discharging batteries for extended periods.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Sena website for any available firmware updates for the SD1000. Firmware updates can improve performance and add new features.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with the Sena SD1000.

6.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Check Power Source: Ensure the battery pack is correctly inserted and charged, or that the USB power cable is securely connected to a functional power source.
  • Battery Condition: If using a battery, try a different battery pack or connect via USB power to rule out a faulty battery.

6.2 Unable to Pair or Connect

  • Bluetooth Enabled: Verify that Bluetooth is enabled on your host device and that the SD1000's Bluetooth indicator is active.
  • Correct PIN: Ensure you are entering the correct Bluetooth PIN (default is often "0000" or "1234"). Check the device's manual or configuration software for the exact PIN.
  • Re-pairing: If previous pairing attempts failed or the device loses connection frequently, try deleting the SD1000 from your host device's Bluetooth list and re-pairing from scratch.
  • Interference: Minimize potential interference by ensuring the SD1000 is not too close to other wireless devices or large metal objects.
  • Baud Rate Mismatch: Confirm that the baud rate settings on the SD1000 (via dip switches or software) match the baud rate of the connected RS-232 device.

6.3 No Data Transmission

  • Connection Status: Verify that the "Connect" LED on the SD1000 is illuminated, indicating an active Bluetooth connection.
  • RS-232 Connection: Ensure the RS-232 cable is securely connected to both the SD1000 and the serial device.
  • Baud Rate and Flow Control: Double-check that the baud rate and hardware flow control settings on the SD1000 match those of the connected RS-232 device. Incorrect settings are a common cause of communication failure.
  • Software Configuration: Use the Windows configuration tools to verify all serial port settings (e.g., data bits, stop bits, parity) are correctly configured and match your application's requirements.
