1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your KICKER CXA1200.1 1200-Watt Mono Class D Subwoofer Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure proper function and safety.
The KICKER CXA1200.1 amplifier is designed to deliver powerful bass performance for your vehicle's audio system. It features a Class D power plant, Failsafe Integration Technology (FIT), KickEQ bass boost, and adjustable crossover and subsonic filters for precise sound tuning.
2. Safety Information
WARNING:
- Always disconnect the vehicle's battery before making any electrical connections.
- Ensure proper grounding to prevent electrical hazards.
- Avoid installing the amplifier in locations exposed to moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Use appropriate gauge wiring for power and speaker connections to prevent overheating.
- High sound pressure levels can cause permanent hearing loss. Use caution when adjusting volume levels.
- This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm (Proposition 65 Warning).
3. Package Contents
Upon unpacking, ensure all items are present and in good condition:
- KICKER CXA1200.1 Mono Amplifier
- Mounting Hardware
- Owner's Manual (this document)
- Remote Bass Control (if included with your model)
4. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. If you are unsure about any steps, consult a professional installer.
4.1 Mounting the Amplifier
Choose a secure, dry location with adequate ventilation. Avoid mounting on carpet or in enclosed spaces without airflow. Use the provided mounting hardware to secure the amplifier firmly.
4.2 Wiring Connections
Refer to the diagrams below for proper wiring. Ensure all connections are tight and insulated.

Figure 1: Rear view of the KICKER CXA1200.1 amplifier showing the power (GND, REM, +12V) and speaker output terminals. Ensure correct polarity and secure connections.
4.2.1 Power Connections
- Ground (GND): Connect a heavy-gauge wire (minimum 4 AWG recommended) from the amplifier's GND terminal to a clean, bare metal point on the vehicle's chassis. The ground wire should be as short as possible.
- Remote (REM): Connect a 18 AWG wire from the amplifier's REM terminal to the remote turn-on lead of your head unit. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your audio system.
- +12V (Power): Connect a heavy-gauge wire (minimum 4 AWG recommended) from the amplifier's +12V terminal directly to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery. Install an appropriate fuse (not supplied) within 18 inches of the battery.
4.2.2 Speaker Connections
Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SPEAKER terminals. The CXA1200.1 is a mono amplifier, designed for a single channel output. Ensure the total impedance of your subwoofers matches the amplifier's stable operating impedance (typically 1 Ohm minimum for this model).
4.2.3 Input Connections

Figure 2: Front view of the KICKER CXA1200.1 amplifier showing the RCA input/output, control knobs, and indicator lights. This panel allows for fine-tuning of audio settings.
Connect the RCA output from your head unit or signal processor to the INPUT RCA jacks on the amplifier. The CXA1200.1 features Failsafe Integration Technology (FIT) which allows it to accept high-level speaker outputs directly from a factory radio if RCA outputs are not available. Use a KICKER KISL adapter for high-level input if needed (sold separately).
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed, adjust the amplifier settings for optimal sound performance.
5.1 Control Panel Overview
The control panel (refer to Figure 2) provides access to various adjustments:
- INPUT LEVEL (LO/HI): Selects between low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker wire) input.
- GAIN: Adjusts the input sensitivity to match the output of your head unit. Start with the gain at minimum and slowly increase until distortion is heard, then back off slightly.
- X-OVER FREQ (Hz): Adjusts the low-pass filter frequency (50-200 Hz). This allows only frequencies below the set point to pass to the subwoofer.
- BASS BOOST (dB): Provides up to 12 dB of bass enhancement at 40 Hz. Use sparingly to avoid distortion.
- REMOTE BASS: Connects an optional wired remote bass control for convenient level adjustment from the driver's seat.
- PRT (Protection) Indicator: Illuminates when the amplifier is in protection mode due to overheating, low voltage, or short circuit.
- PWR (Power) Indicator: Illuminates when the amplifier is powered on and operating normally.
5.2 Initial Setup Procedure
- Turn off your head unit and set all tone controls (bass, treble, balance, fader) to flat or center.
- Set the amplifier's GAIN control to minimum.
- Set the X-OVER FREQ to your desired low-pass frequency (e.g., 80 Hz).
- Play a dynamic music track.
- Slowly increase the head unit volume until it reaches about 3/4 of its maximum level.
- Slowly increase the amplifier's GAIN control until you hear audible distortion, then back off slightly.
- Adjust the BASS BOOST and X-OVER FREQ to fine-tune the sound to your preference.
