4. Installation Instructions
Safety First: Before beginning any maintenance, ensure the engine is turned off, cool, and the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental starting.
- Locate the Air Filter Housing: Identify the air filter housing on your Gravely Model L or C tractor. It is typically a cylindrical or rectangular cover near the carburetor.
- Remove the Air Filter Cover: Unfasten the clips, screws, or wing nuts that secure the air filter cover. Carefully remove the cover.
- Remove Old Filter Components: Take out the old air filter and prefilter. Note their orientation for correct installation of the new parts. Dispose of old components responsibly.
- Clean the Housing: Inspect the air filter housing for any dirt, dust, or debris. Clean the inside of the housing with a clean cloth, ensuring no foreign material enters the carburetor.
- Install the New Prefilter: Place the new prefilter (foam element) over the new main air filter. Ensure it fits snugly and covers the entire surface of the main filter.
- Install the New Air Filter Assembly: Insert the combined new air filter and prefilter assembly into the air filter housing. Ensure it seats correctly and forms a tight seal.
- Reattach the Air Filter Cover: Place the air filter cover back onto the housing and secure it with the clips, screws, or wing nuts. Ensure it is tightly sealed to prevent unfiltered air from entering the engine.
- Reconnect Spark Plug Wire: Reconnect the spark plug wire.
Your air filter system is now installed and ready for operation.
5. Maintenance
Regular inspection and maintenance of your air filter are essential for engine health.
- Inspection Frequency: Inspect the air filter and prefilter every 25 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions.
- Cleaning the Prefilter: The foam prefilter can often be cleaned. Remove it from the main filter, wash it in warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to air dry completely before reinstallation. Do not oil the prefilter unless specifically instructed by your equipment's manual.
- Cleaning the Main Air Filter: The main paper air filter should generally not be washed. Lightly tap it against a hard surface to dislodge loose dirt. Do not use compressed air, as this can damage the filter media.
- Replacement: Replace the main air filter if it appears heavily soiled, damaged, or if cleaning the prefilter does not restore adequate airflow. A clogged air filter can lead to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and premature engine wear.
6. Troubleshooting
If you experience engine performance issues, consider the air filter as a potential cause.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine loses power or runs rough | Clogged air filter | Inspect and clean/replace air filter and prefilter. |
| Increased fuel consumption | Restricted airflow due to dirty filter | Inspect and clean/replace air filter and prefilter. |
| Engine smokes excessively (black smoke) | Rich fuel mixture due to insufficient air | Inspect and clean/replace air filter and prefilter. If issue persists, consult a qualified technician. |
