Wago 221-412 2-Conductor Compact Connector User Manual

1. Product Overview

The Wago 221-412 is a 2-conductor compact splicing connector designed for quick, tool-free, and secure electrical connections. It is suitable for connecting solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors of various cross-sections. Its compact design allows for use in confined spaces, and its transparent housing enables visual inspection of connections.

Key features include:

  • Lever-actuated design: Ensures easy and secure wire insertion and removal.
  • Tool-free operation: Simplifies the connection process.
  • Versatile compatibility: Connects different conductor types and sizes.
  • Compact size: Ideal for installations with limited space.
  • Integrated test points: Allows for voltage testing even after installation.
  • Transparent housing: Provides visual verification of proper wire insertion.

2. Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power to the circuit before installing or removing connectors.
  • Ensure that the wire gauge and voltage ratings of the conductors match the specifications of the Wago 221-412 connector.
  • Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any electrical procedures.
  • Do not use damaged connectors or wires.
  • Ensure no bare wire is exposed outside the connector after installation to prevent short circuits.

3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the Wago 221-412 compact connector:

  1. Prepare the Wires: Strip approximately 11 mm (0.43 inches) of insulation from the end of each conductor. Ensure the stripped wire is clean and free of frayed strands. The Wago 221-412 is rated for 24-12 AWG wiring.
  2. Open the Lever: For each wire you intend to connect, lift the orange operating lever on the connector to its fully open position.
  3. Insert the Conductor: Insert the stripped end of the wire completely into the open clamping unit. The transparent housing allows for visual verification that the conductor is fully inserted and no bare wire is exposed.
  4. Close the Lever: Push the orange operating lever back down until it clicks into place. This secures the wire connection.
  5. Repeat for Additional Wires: Repeat steps 2-4 for all other conductors you wish to connect to the same connector.
  6. Verify Connection: Gently tug on each wire to ensure it is securely held by the connector. Visually inspect through the transparent housing to confirm proper insertion and no exposed copper.

4. Operating Instructions

The Wago 221-412 connectors are designed for simple operation:

  • Connecting Wires: As described in the installation section, simply lift the lever, insert the stripped wire, and close the lever.
  • Disconnecting Wires: To remove a wire, lift its corresponding orange operating lever to the open position and gently pull the wire out. The connector can be reused if it is undamaged.
  • Testing: The connector features two easily accessible test points. One is located in the conductor entry direction, and the other is on the opposite side. These allow for convenient voltage testing even when the connector is installed.

5. Maintenance

The Wago 221-412 connectors require minimal maintenance:

  • Periodically inspect connectors for any signs of damage, discoloration, or loose connections.
  • Ensure the levers are fully closed and wires are securely seated.
  • Keep the connectors clean and free from dust or debris.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Wago 221-412 connectors, consider the following:

  • Loose Connection: Ensure the wire is stripped to the correct length (11 mm / 0.43 inches) and fully inserted into the clamping unit. Confirm the orange lever is completely closed.
  • Short Circuit: Check for any exposed bare wire outside the connector. If found, re-strip and re-insert the wire, or replace the connector if necessary.
  • No Power: Use the integrated test points to verify voltage. If no voltage is detected, check the power source and upstream connections.
  • Overheating: Ensure the wire gauge is appropriate for the current load and that the connector's ratings are not exceeded.
