Electro-Harmonix SOUL POG

Electro-Harmonix Soul POG Overdrive/Octave Multi-Effect Pedal Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Electro-Harmonix Soul POG combines two distinct effects: the Soul Food transparent overdrive and the Nano POG polyphonic octave generator. This multi-effect pedal allows musicians to utilize these effects independently or in combination, offering versatile sound shaping capabilities. The unit features an FX loop for integrating other pedals between the overdrive and octave sections, and a Mode switch for selecting different octave-up sounds. This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Soul POG pedal.

Features

  • Soul Food Overdrive: Delivers transparent overdrive with excellent touch sensitivity, response, and headroom.
  • Nano POG Octave Generator: Features polyphonic sub-octave and octave-up effects with precise tracking.
  • Flexible Effect Order: Use either effect alone or combine them in any order within your signal chain.
  • Octave-Up Modes: Choose between two distinct octave-up sounds via the Mode switch.
  • Integrated FX Loop: Allows for the insertion of other effects pedals between the Soul Food and Nano POG sections.
  • Power Adapter Included: Comes with a dedicated 9.6V power supply for immediate use.

Connecting the Pedal

  1. Ensure your amplifier and other audio equipment are turned off.
  2. Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the INPUT jack on the right side of the Soul POG using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  3. Connect the EFFECT OUT jack on the left side of the Soul POG to your amplifier's input or the next pedal in your signal chain using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  4. If you wish to use the FX Loop, connect the SEND jack to the input of an external effect pedal and the output of that external pedal to the RETURN jack.
  5. Connect the provided 9.6V DC power supply to the 9V power jack at the top of the pedal. Plug the power supply into a standard AC outlet.
  6. Turn on your amplifier and other audio equipment. The Soul POG is now ready for operation.

Controls and Connections Overview

Knobs:

  • DRY: Controls the volume of the original, unprocessed instrument signal from the POG section.
  • SUB OCTAVE: Adjusts the volume of the signal one octave below the original from the POG section.
  • OCTAVE UP: Adjusts the volume of the signal one octave above the original from the POG section.
  • VOL: Controls the overall output volume of the Soul Food overdrive section.
  • TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response of the Soul Food overdrive section.
  • DRIVE: Controls the amount of gain and overdrive from the Soul Food section.

Switches:

  • MODE Switch: Toggles between two different octave-up sounds for the POG section. Experiment to find the preferred character.

Footswitches:

  • POG Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the Nano POG octave generator section. The corresponding LED indicates its active status.
  • SOUL FOOD Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the Soul Food overdrive section. The corresponding LED indicates its active status.

Jacks:

  • INPUT: 1/4-inch instrument input.
  • SEND: 1/4-inch output for the FX Loop, sending signal from the Soul Food to external effects.
  • RETURN: 1/4-inch input for the FX Loop, receiving signal from external effects before the POG section.
  • EFFECT OUT: 1/4-inch main output for the processed signal.
  • DRY OUT: 1/4-inch output for the unprocessed instrument signal, allowing for parallel processing or routing to a separate amplifier.
  • 9V Power: Input for the 9.6V DC power supply.

Using the Effects

The Soul POG allows for independent or combined use of its two effects. Press the SOUL FOOD footswitch to activate the overdrive, and the POG footswitch to activate the octave generator. The order of effects can be customized using the internal FX loop. By default, the Soul Food is before the POG. To insert other pedals between them, use the SEND and RETURN jacks. The DRY OUT jack provides a clean signal, useful for bi-amping or sending to a tuner without affecting the main effect chain.

Maintenance

The Electro-Harmonix Soul POG is designed for durability. To ensure its longevity and optimal performance:

  • Keep the pedal clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Protect the pedal from extreme temperatures, moisture, and direct sunlight.
  • Always use the provided 9.6V DC power supply or a compatible regulated power supply to prevent damage.
  • Avoid dropping the pedal or subjecting it to strong impacts.

Troubleshooting

No Sound or Weak Signal

  • Check Power: Ensure the 9.6V DC power supply is correctly connected to the pedal and a working power outlet. The power LED should illuminate.
  • Cable Connections: Verify all instrument cables are securely plugged into the correct INPUT, EFFECT OUT, and amplifier jacks. Test cables for faults.
  • Bypass Mode: If the pedal is in bypass mode (both effect LEDs off), ensure your instrument and amplifier are producing sound.
  • Volume Settings: Check the VOL knob on the Soul Food section and the DRY, SUB OCTAVE, and OCTAVE UP knobs on the POG section. Ensure they are not set to minimum.
  • FX Loop: If using the FX Loop, ensure any external pedals are powered on and functioning correctly, and that the SEND/RETURN cables are properly connected.

Unwanted Noise or Hum

  • Power Supply: Use only the recommended regulated 9.6V DC power supply. Unregulated or incorrect power supplies can introduce noise.
  • Grounding: Ensure all audio equipment is properly grounded.
  • Cable Quality: Use high-quality, shielded instrument cables.
  • Proximity to Interference: Keep the pedal away from power transformers, fluorescent lights, and other sources of electromagnetic interference.

Octave Tracking Issues

  • Clean Signal: The POG section tracks best with a clean, clear input signal. Avoid excessive distortion or complex chords when trying to achieve precise octave tracking.
  • Pickup Output: Ensure your instrument's pickups are providing a strong, consistent signal.
