5.3 Adjusting Flash Head Position

The SB-5000 supports various flash synchronization modes:

  • Slow Sync: Combines flash with slow shutter speeds for bright backgrounds in low light.
  • High-Speed Sync (Auto FP): Allows flash use at all shutter speeds, useful for wide apertures in bright conditions.
  • 1st Curtain Sync: Flash fires immediately after the shutter opens.
  • 2nd Curtain Sync: Flash fires just before the shutter closes, creating natural-looking light trails behind moving subjects.

6. Advanced Features

6.1 Radio Control Advanced Wireless Lighting

The SB-5000 features radio-controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting, allowing for reliable off-camera flash control without line-of-sight limitations. This requires a compatible Nikon camera and/or wireless controller (e.g., WR-R10).

6.2 Cooling System

An integrated cooling system enables the SB-5000 to fire up to 100 consecutive shots at full power without overheating, ensuring consistent performance during demanding shoots.

7. Maintenance

To maintain your SB-5000 Speedlight in optimal condition:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior. For stubborn dirt, a slightly dampened cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries when the Speedlight will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Storage: Store the Speedlight in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SB-5000, refer to the following common solutions:

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
Flash does not fire.
  • Check battery installation and charge level.
  • Ensure the Speedlight is securely mounted to the camera's hot shoe.
  • Verify camera flash settings are enabled.
Flash output is too weak/strong.
  • Confirm i-TTL mode is active or adjust manual flash power.
  • Check flash exposure compensation settings on camera or Speedlight.
  • Ensure flash head is not obstructed.
AF-Assist illuminator does not activate with mirrorless cameras. This is a known characteristic with some Nikon mirrorless bodies; the camera body may not initiate the AF-Assist beam from the Speedlight. This is not a malfunction of the SB-5000.
Speedlight overheats. The SB-5000 has a cooling system. If overheating occurs, allow the unit to cool down. Avoid rapid, consecutive full-power flashes beyond its rated capacity.

If the problem persists, consult the Nikon support website or contact customer service.
