Setup and Installation
1. Enclosure Requirements
The Skar Audio EVL-65 D4 is designed for optimal performance in a properly sized and constructed enclosure. Consult a car audio professional or use a reputable enclosure design software for precise box specifications tailored to your vehicle and desired sound.
2. Mounting
Ensure the mounting surface is rigid and free from obstructions. Use appropriate mounting hardware (not included) to secure the subwoofer firmly. The subwoofer requires a cutout diameter of approximately 5.7 inches (145mm) and a mounting depth of 4.13 inches (105mm).
3. Wiring Connections
The EVL-65 D4 features a dual 4 Ohm voice coil configuration, offering flexibility in wiring. Proper impedance matching with your amplifier is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent damage.
Parallel Wiring (2 Ohm Load)
Connect the positive (+) terminal of Voice Coil 1 to the positive (+) terminal of Voice Coil 2. Connect the negative (-) terminal of Voice Coil 1 to the negative (-) terminal of Voice Coil 2. Then, connect the combined positive to the amplifier's positive terminal and the combined negative to the amplifier's negative terminal. This configuration results in a 2 Ohm load.
Series Wiring (8 Ohm Load)
Connect the positive (+) terminal of Voice Coil 1 to the amplifier's positive terminal. Connect the negative (-) terminal of Voice Coil 1 to the positive (+) terminal of Voice Coil 2. Connect the negative (-) terminal of Voice Coil 2 to the amplifier's negative terminal. This configuration results in an 8 Ohm load.
Important: Always verify your amplifier's stable impedance range before wiring. Incorrect impedance can lead to amplifier overheating or damage.
Operating Instructions
1. Break-in Period
Allow a break-in period of approximately 20-30 hours of normal listening before operating the subwoofer at high volumes. This allows the suspension components to loosen up and perform optimally.
2. Amplifier Gain Setting
Set your amplifier's gain control carefully. Do not use the gain control as a volume knob. It should be set to match the output voltage of your head unit. Setting the gain too high can lead to clipping and damage to the subwoofer.
3. Crossover Settings
Utilize your amplifier's or head unit's low-pass filter (LPF) to ensure the subwoofer only reproduces low frequencies. A typical LPF setting for this subwoofer is between 80Hz and 120Hz. A subsonic filter (HPF) set around 25-30Hz is also recommended to protect the subwoofer from extremely low, damaging frequencies.
Maintenance
- Keep the subwoofer cone and surround clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
- Regularly check wiring connections for tightness and corrosion.
- Avoid spilling liquids on the subwoofer.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Sound from Subwoofer | No power to amplifier, loose wiring, amplifier in protect mode, incorrect input signal. | Check amplifier power, ground, and remote turn-on connections. Verify all speaker and RCA cables are securely connected. Check amplifier fuses. |
| Distorted Sound | Amplifier gain too high, incorrect crossover settings, damaged voice coil, poor enclosure. | Reduce amplifier gain. Adjust LPF and subsonic filter settings. Inspect subwoofer for physical damage. Ensure enclosure is properly sealed and sized. |
| Subwoofer Overheating | Underpowered amplifier, incorrect impedance, prolonged high volume use, poor ventilation. | Ensure amplifier provides sufficient RMS power. Verify correct impedance matching. Allow for cool-down periods. Ensure adequate airflow around the amplifier. |
