2. Safety Information
Always observe safety precautions when using any electrical testing equipment. This device complies with international safety standard IEC/EN 61010-1 600V CAT III.
- Ensure the multimeter is in good working condition before use.
- Do not apply voltage or current that exceeds the maximum specified limits for each range.
- Use caution when working with live circuits. Always assume circuits are live until proven otherwise.
- Inspect test leads for damage before each use. Replace if insulation is cracked or wires are exposed.
- To avoid electrical shock, remove test leads from the meter and the circuit before opening the battery cover or fuse compartment.
- To prevent fire, install fuses with the correct amp/volt ratings: F 250mA/250V and F 10A/250V.
- Do not operate the meter if the battery indicator shows low battery.

4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The Tekpower TP8233B is powered by a single 9V battery. Follow these steps to install or replace the battery:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads from the input jacks and any circuits.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter (refer to Figure 2).
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw securing the battery cover.
- Remove the cover.
- Connect the 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
- Place the battery into the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
The multimeter uses two test leads, typically red for positive (+) and black for common (-). Connect them as follows:
- Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (Common) input jack.
- For most measurements (Voltage, Resistance, Diode, Continuity, and low DC Current), insert the red test lead into the "VΩmA" input jack.
- For high DC Current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the "10A" input jack. Ensure the rotary switch is set to the appropriate 10A range.

5. Operating Instructions
To begin using your multimeter, turn the rotary switch from the "OFF" position to the desired measurement function and range.
5.1 DC Voltage Measurement (DCV)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCV range (200m, 2V, 20V, 200V, 600V). If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range (600V) and decrease as necessary.
- Connect the red test lead to the positive (+) side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative (-) side.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display. The polarity will be indicated.
5.2 AC Voltage Measurement (ACV)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired ACV range (200V, 600V).
- Connect the test leads across the AC voltage source.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
5.3 DC Current Measurement (DCA)
- Important: To measure current, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCA range (200µA, 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 10A).
- For ranges up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack. For the 10A range, connect the red test lead to the "10A" jack.
- Open the circuit where current is to be measured and insert the multimeter in series.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
5.4 Resistance Measurement (Ω)
- Important: Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2MΩ).
- Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
5.5 Diode Check
- Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol (→|•).
- Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes). Reversing the leads should show "OL" (Over Load) for a good diode.
5.6 Continuity Test
- Set the rotary switch to the Continuity symbol (•)))).
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component to be tested.
- If there is continuity (low resistance), the multimeter will emit an audible beep and display a low resistance value. If there is no continuity, it will display "OL".
5.7 Data Hold Function
- Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the current reading on the LCD display.
- Press the "HOLD" button again to release the reading and return to live measurement.
5.8 Backlight Function
- Press the backlight button (indicated by a sun/star symbol) to illuminate the LCD display for better visibility in low-light conditions.
- Press the button again to turn off the backlight.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
When the battery low indication appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in Section 4.1. Prompt battery replacement ensures accurate readings and proper device function.
6.2 Fuse Replacement
The multimeter is protected by two fuses. If the current measurement function fails, one of the fuses may need replacement. Always replace fuses with the specified ratings to maintain safety and functionality:
- F1: 250mA / 250V (for mA ranges)
- F2: 10A / 250V (for 10A range)
To replace a fuse, follow the battery replacement steps to open the back cover. The fuses are located inside the meter. Carefully remove the old fuse and insert a new one of the correct rating. Secure the cover before use.
6.3 Cleaning
To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before use or storage.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Tekpower TP8233B, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Low or dead battery | Replace the 9V battery (refer to Section 4.1). |
| "OL" (Over Load) displayed | Measurement exceeds selected range; Open circuit (for continuity/current) | Select a higher range; Check circuit connections for breaks. |
| Incorrect or unstable readings | Poor test lead connection; Interference; Damaged leads | Ensure leads are firmly inserted; Move away from strong electromagnetic fields; Replace damaged leads. |
| Current measurement not working | Blown fuse; Incorrect lead connection | Check and replace fuses (refer to Section 6.2); Ensure red lead is in the correct current jack (VΩmA or 10A). |
