3. Product Overview
The SAUTER TSE Thermostat is a critical component for regulating the water temperature in your water heater. It consists of a main control unit and a long sensing probe.

Figure 3.1: Image showing the Sauter TSE thermostat with its blue body, red adjustment dial, and the 45 cm metal probe extending from it. The probe is designed to be inserted into the water heater's heating element well.
- Control Unit: The main body, typically blue, houses the electrical connections and the temperature adjustment dial.
- Adjustment Dial: A red dial on the control unit allows for setting the desired water temperature.
- Sensing Probe: A 45 cm long metal rod, made of stainless steel, extends from the control unit. This probe is inserted into the water heater to accurately measure water temperature.
4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps carefully for proper installation. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified electrician or plumber.
- Disconnect Power: Locate the circuit breaker for your water heater and turn it OFF. Verify that power is disconnected using a voltage tester.
- Drain Water Heater (if necessary): Depending on your water heater model, you may need to drain some water to access the thermostat well. Refer to your water heater's manual.
- Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully disconnect the electrical wires from the old thermostat and remove it from its housing. Note the wiring configuration.
- Insert New Thermostat: Gently insert the 45 cm sensing probe of the SAUTER TSE Thermostat into the designated well or sleeve on your water heater. Ensure it is fully seated.
- Connect Wiring: Connect the electrical wires to the new thermostat terminals according to the water heater's wiring diagram or the configuration noted from the old thermostat. Ensure connections are tight and secure.
- Secure Thermostat: Secure the thermostat in place, ensuring it is stable and the probe remains properly seated.
- Restore Power: Once all connections are secure and the thermostat is properly installed, restore power to the water heater at the circuit breaker.
5. Operating Instructions
The SAUTER TSE Thermostat is designed for simple operation.
- Initial Power-Up: After installation and power restoration, the water heater will begin heating water to the factory preset temperature.
- Adjusting Temperature: To adjust the desired water temperature, carefully turn the red adjustment dial on the front of the thermostat. The dial typically has markings indicating temperature ranges or relative settings (e.g., Min to Max). Turn clockwise to increase temperature and counter-clockwise to decrease.
- Monitoring: Allow time for the water heater to reach the new set temperature. The thermostat will automatically cycle the heating element on and off to maintain the set temperature.
Note: For energy efficiency and safety, it is generally recommended not to set the water temperature higher than necessary (e.g., 50-60°C or 120-140°F) to prevent scalding and reduce energy consumption.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and efficient operation of your thermostat and water heater.
- Annual Inspection: Annually, disconnect power and visually inspect the thermostat and its connections for any signs of corrosion, loose wires, or damage.
- Probe Seating: Ensure the sensing probe remains fully seated in its well. Improper seating can lead to inaccurate temperature readings.
- Cleaning: If necessary, gently wipe the exterior of the thermostat with a dry, clean cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the unit in water.
