1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the HIOKI 3169 Clamp Power Meter. This instrument is designed for precise measurement of electrical parameters in various power systems. It allows for simultaneous measurement of demand and harmonics across multiple circuits, providing comprehensive data for analysis and monitoring.

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your HIOKI 3169. Please read it thoroughly before operation and keep it for future reference.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the safety precautions described in this manual to ensure safe operation and to prevent damage to the instrument or injury to personnel. Pay special attention to warnings and cautions.

  • Do not attempt to measure current or power with the 3169 main unit alone. External clamp-on sensors are required.
  • Ensure the power supply voltage is within the specified range (AC 100V to 240V).
  • Do not operate the instrument in wet environments or where explosive gases are present.
  • Refer to the separate instruction manuals for any optional accessories used with this device.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Checking Accessories

Carefully unpack the instrument and verify that all accessories listed below are present and undamaged:

  • Voltage cord L9438-53 ×1 (Black, Red, Yellow, Blue)
  • Power cord ×1
  • Grounding adapter ×1
  • Instruction manual ×1
  • Quick start manual ×1
  • CD-R ×1 (RS-232C instruction)
  • Input cord label ×1

Note: The HIOKI 3169 main unit does not include clamp-on sensors for current and power measurement. These must be purchased separately according to your specific measurement requirements. A PC card is also required for data collection and automatic saving of measurement data.

3.2 Connecting Power and Sensors

Connect the provided power cord to the instrument and a suitable AC power outlet (100V to 240V, 50/60Hz). Connect the voltage cords to the appropriate terminals on the device and the circuit to be measured. Attach the optional clamp-on sensors to the current measurement points and connect them to the instrument.

4.2 Measurement Items and Ranges

The instrument can measure the following items:

  • Voltage (AC 150.00 to 600.00 V, 3 ranges)
  • Current (AC 500.00 mA to 5.0000 kA, range varies by sensor)
  • Active Power, Reactive Power, Apparent Power
  • Active Energy, Reactive Energy
  • Power Factor
  • Frequency
  • Harmonics (up to 40th order)

The power range (75.000 W to 900.00 kW) is determined by the combination of the selected voltage/current range and measurement line configuration.

4.3 Recording and Data Storage

Measurement data can be automatically saved to a PC card. The recording interval can be set as follows:

  • Standard: 1 to 30 seconds, 1 to 60 minutes (13 settings)
  • Short-term: 1 cycle / 0.1 / 0.2 / 0.5 seconds (for instantaneous values only)

4.4 Functions

The HIOKI 3169 includes several useful functions:

  • Wiring Error Check: Helps identify incorrect wiring configurations.
  • Display Language Switching: Allows changing the display language.
  • Display Hold Function: Freezes the current display readings.
  • Backup Function: Preserves settings and data in case of power loss.
  • Power Outage Processing: Manages data integrity during unexpected power interruptions.
  • Key Lock Function: Prevents accidental changes to settings.
  • D/A Output (-01 specification): Provides 4-channel analog output of measurement items (DC ±5V f.s.).

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and accuracy of your HIOKI 3169, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the instrument with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the instrument in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
  • Calibration: Regular calibration by qualified personnel is recommended to maintain measurement accuracy.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your HIOKI 3169, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Check the power cord connection and the power outlet. Ensure the power supply voltage is correct.
  • Incorrect Readings: Verify that the clamp-on sensors are correctly attached and the voltage leads are properly connected. Check the measurement range settings.
  • Data Not Saving: Ensure a compatible PC card is inserted correctly and has sufficient free space.

For persistent issues or complex problems, please contact HIOKI customer support or your local distributor for assistance.
