4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Upon receiving your KD3005P, carefully unpack all components. Verify that the following items are included:
- KORAD KD3005P Power Supply Unit
- Power Cord
- Set of 5 Amp Test Leads (Banana Plugs/Alligator Clips)
- User Manual (this document)
- USB Cable
- Software CD/Download instructions
Inspect the unit for any signs of physical damage. If any damage is found or components are missing, contact your distributor immediately.
4.2 Power Connection
- Ensure the power switch on the front panel is in the OFF position.
- Locate the input voltage selector switch on the rear panel. Set it to match your local mains voltage (110V or 220V).
- Connect the provided power cord to the AC inlet on the rear panel and then to a grounded electrical outlet.
- For safety, ensure the unit is properly grounded using the Earth (GND) terminal if required by your application or local regulations.
4.3 Connecting the Load
Connect your device or circuit to the output terminals on the front panel using the provided test leads. Ensure correct polarity: Red (+) to positive, Black (-) to negative.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
Press the Power Switch on the front panel to turn the unit ON. The LED displays will illuminate. Press it again to turn the unit OFF.
5.2 Setting Voltage
- Rotate the Voltage Adjustment Knob to change the output voltage.
- Push the Voltage Adjustment Knob to toggle between coarse adjustment (larger steps) and fine adjustment (smaller steps for precise control).
- The set voltage will be displayed on the upper LED screen.
5.3 Setting Current (Current Limit)
- Rotate the Current Adjustment Knob to set the maximum output current (current limit).
- Push the Current Adjustment Knob to toggle between coarse and fine adjustment.
- The set current limit will be displayed on the lower LED screen.
- When a load is connected and the current drawn reaches this limit, the unit will enter Constant Current (CC) mode, and the C.C indicator will illuminate.
5.4 Constant Voltage (CV) and Constant Current (CC) Modes
- Constant Voltage (CV): When the load current is below the set current limit, the power supply maintains the set output voltage. The C.V indicator will be lit.
- Constant Current (CC): When the load current reaches the set current limit, the power supply automatically switches to Constant Current mode, reducing the output voltage to maintain the set current. The C.C indicator will be lit.
5.5 Panel Lock/Unlock
To prevent accidental changes to voltage and current settings, push and hold the Voltage Adjustment Knob for a few seconds. The LOCK indicator will illuminate, and the controls will be disabled. Repeat the action to unlock the panel.
5.6 Over Current Protection (OCP)
The OCP function protects the connected load from excessive current. To activate/deactivate OCP, push and hold the Current Adjustment Knob for a few seconds. When active, the OCP indicator will illuminate. If the output current exceeds the OCP threshold, the power supply will shut down its output to protect the load.
6. Programmable Control (USB & RS232)
The KD3005P can be remotely controlled via a computer using its USB or RS232 interface. This allows for automated testing, data logging, and precise control of output parameters.

Figure 4: KD3005P connected to a computer for remote control and programming.
6.1 Software Installation
- Insert the provided software CD into your computer's drive or download the latest software version from the official KORAD website.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software and any necessary drivers for the USB/RS232 interface.
6.2 Connecting to a Computer
- Ensure the KD3005P is powered off.
- Connect one end of the USB cable to the USB port on the rear of the power supply and the other end to an available USB port on your computer. Alternatively, use an RS232 cable for the RS232 port.
- Power on the KD3005P.
- Launch the KORAD control software on your computer. The software should automatically detect the connected power supply. If not, refer to the software's help documentation for manual connection setup.
6.3 Using the Software
The software interface allows you to:
- Set voltage and current limits digitally.
- Monitor real-time output voltage and current.
- Toggle output ON/OFF.
- Configure OCP and other protection settings.
- Log data for analysis.
Refer to the software's dedicated user guide for detailed instructions on its features and operation.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Disconnect the power supply from the mains before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ventilation: Ensure the ventilation openings on the unit are not obstructed to allow for proper airflow and cooling. Regularly check for dust buildup around the fan and vents.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the power supply in a dry, dust-free environment.
- Fuse Replacement: If the unit fails to power on, check the fuse located near the AC inlet on the rear panel. Replace it only with a fuse of the same type and rating (e.g., 5A/250V for 110V input, 3A/250V for 220V input).
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unit does not power on. | No power from outlet; Power cord loose; Blown fuse; Incorrect voltage selector. | Check power outlet; Secure power cord; Replace fuse (see Maintenance); Verify 110V/220V selector switch. |
| No output voltage/current. | Output OFF (if applicable via software); OCP active; Short circuit in load; Panel locked. | Check software output status; Reset OCP; Disconnect load and check for short; Unlock panel. |
| Voltage sags under load. | Current limit set too low; Load resistance too high for set current. | Increase current limit; Ensure load characteristics match power supply capabilities. |
| Fan is noisy or not running. | Dust buildup; Fan malfunction; Low current operation (fan may not run at low loads). | Clean vents; If persistent, contact support. Note: Fan operation is variable and may not run at low loads. |
| Remote control not working. | Incorrect cable; Driver not installed; Software not configured correctly; COM port conflict. | Verify cable type; Install drivers; Check software settings and COM port. |
