1. Introduction

The Kestrel 3000 Pocket Weather Meter is a rugged, handheld device designed for accurate environmental measurements. It provides essential data for various applications, including outdoor activities, agriculture, and research. This meter is built to withstand harsh conditions, being waterproof (IP-67), floatable, and drop-tested to military standards (MIL-STD-810G).

It measures a comprehensive range of environmental parameters, including heat stress index, relative humidity, dew point temperature, wind chill, air/water/snow temperature, and current/average/maximum wind speeds, all displayed on a clear LCD.

3. Setup

3.1. Battery Installation

The Kestrel 3000 requires one CR2032 Lithium Metal battery. The battery compartment is located on the back of the unit.

  1. Locate the battery cover on the back of the device.
  2. Using a small coin or screwdriver, turn the battery cover counter-clockwise to unlock it.
  3. Remove the old battery (if applicable) and insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  4. Replace the battery cover and turn it clockwise to secure and seal the compartment. Ensure it is tightly sealed to maintain waterproof integrity.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Power On/Off

  • To turn on: Press the center button (power/mode button).
  • To turn off: Press and hold the center button for approximately 3 seconds until the display turns off. The unit will also automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.

4.2. Navigating Modes

Use the left and right arrow buttons to cycle through the different measurement modes. The Kestrel 3000 offers the following modes:

  • Wind Speed: Current, Average, and Maximum wind speed (displayed in mph, km/h, knots, m/s, or ft/min).
  • Temperature: Air, Water, and Snow temperature (displayed in °F or °C).
  • Wind Chill: Calculated wind chill temperature.
  • Relative Humidity: Percentage of relative humidity.
  • Heat Stress Index: Calculated heat stress index.
  • Dew Point: Calculated dew point temperature.

To reset average/max values in wind speed mode, press and hold the center button while in the respective mode.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

Clean the Kestrel 3000 with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the impeller area is free from debris for accurate wind speed readings.

5.2. Impeller Replacement

The Kestrel 3000 features a large, replaceable impeller. If the impeller becomes damaged or worn, it can be easily replaced to maintain accuracy. Refer to the official Kestrel website or contact support for replacement parts and instructions.

5.3. Storage

When not in use, store the Kestrel 3000 in its protective slip-on cover in a cool, dry place. For long-term storage, it is recommended to remove the battery to prevent leakage.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Display is blank or dim. Low or dead battery. Replace the CR2032 battery. Ensure it is inserted correctly.
Inaccurate wind speed readings. Impeller obstructed or damaged. Check the impeller for debris. If damaged, replace the impeller.
Inaccurate humidity/temperature readings. Sensor obstructed or needs time to acclimate. Ensure the sensor area is clear. Allow the unit to acclimate to the environment for a few minutes.
Unit does not respond to button presses. Unit frozen or battery issue. Remove and reinsert the battery to perform a soft reset. If problem persists, replace battery.
