The Sonim XP5 XP5700 is an ultra-rugged feature phone designed for demanding environments. It features military-grade certification, making it resistant to dust, rain, salt, humidity, radiation, and shock. The device is waterproof and dustproof with IP68 certification. 2. Getting Started
2.1. Installing the SIM Card
The Sonim XP5 XP5700 requires a Micro SIM card for network connectivity. The SIM card is not included with the device. Please contact your network provider to obtain a compatible Micro SIM card.
- Carefully remove the battery cover using the complimentary screwdriver provided in the package.
- Insert the Micro SIM card into the designated slot, ensuring correct orientation.
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screws. Caution: Do not overtighten the screws, as this may strip them and compromise the device's waterproof seal.
2.2. Battery Installation and Charging
The device uses a 3180 mAh Li-Ion battery. For optimal performance, fully charge the battery before first use.
- After installing the SIM card, insert the battery into its compartment.
- Connect the charging cable to the Charge/Sync Port at the bottom of the device and to a power source.
- The device will indicate when it is charging. A full charge can provide up to 11 days of standby time or 19 hours of talk time.
2.3. Powering On/Off
- To power on, press and hold the On/Off, End, Reject Key until the Sonim logo appears.
- To power off, press and hold the On/Off, End, Reject Key, then select "Power off" from the options.
3. Basic Operation
3.1. Making and Receiving Calls
- To make a call: Enter the phone number using the numeric keypad and press the Call/Accept Key.
- To answer a call: Press the Call/Accept Key when the phone rings.
- To end or reject a call: Press the On/Off, End, Reject Key.
- Adjusting volume: Use the Volume Keys on the left side of the device during a call.
3.2. Sending and Receiving Text Messages (SMS/MMS)
The Sonim XP5 supports standard SMS and MMS messaging. Navigate to the Messaging application from the main menu to compose and view messages.
- Use the numeric keypad to type messages. Pressing a key multiple times cycles through characters.
- The phone features predictive text input, which can be enabled or disabled in settings.
3.3. Navigation and Menu Access
- Use the Navigation Keys (up, down, left, right) to move through menus and options on the display.
- Press the center key of the Navigation Keys to select an item.
- The Menu Key (left soft key) provides context-sensitive options.
- The Back Key (right soft key) returns to the previous screen.
- The Clear Key deletes characters or returns to the previous input field.
3.4. Camera and Flashlight
- Camera: Access the Camera application from the main menu. The 5MP rear camera can capture photos and record videos up to 720p.
- Flashlight: Press the dedicated Flashlight Key on the side of the device to turn the flashlight on or off.
4. Advanced Features
4.1. Push-to-Talk (PTT)
The Sonim XP5 is designed for Push-to-Talk (PTT) communication. The dedicated EPTT Key on the side of the device allows for instant communication with your team. Consult your network provider for specific PTT service activation and usage instructions.
4.2. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Connectivity
The device supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity.
- Wi-Fi: To connect to a Wi-Fi network, navigate to System Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi. Turn Wi-Fi on and select an available network to connect.
- Bluetooth: To pair with a Bluetooth device, navigate to System Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on, make your device discoverable, and select the desired device from the list to pair.
4.3. Configuring Access Point Names (APN) for Data Service
To enable mobile data and MMS messaging, you may need to manually configure the Access Point Name (APN) settings provided by your carrier. Contact your carrier for the correct APN configuration for your SIM card.
- From the application screen or by pressing the Menu Key, select System Settings.
- Scroll down and select More....
- Select Mobile Networks.
- Select Access Point Names (APN).
- Press the Menu Key (top left on keypad) and select New APN.
- Enter the APN information exactly as provided by your carrier into the appropriate text fields. Do not enter any other information.
- Press the Menu Key again and select Save.
- On the APN screen, ensure the newly added APN is selected (indicated by a blue dot).
- Press the Back Key repeatedly to return to the main screen.
- Power off the phone, wait a minute, and then power it back on for the changes to take effect.
5. Maintenance and Care
The Sonim XP5 XP5700 is built to be highly durable and rugged, with IP68, IP69, and MIL-STD-810G certifications for resistance against water, dust, drops, and extreme temperatures.
- Cleaning: To clean the device, use a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Ensure all port covers are securely closed before cleaning with water.
- Water and Dust Resistance: While the device is waterproof and dustproof, ensure all port covers (e.g., Charge/Sync Port, headphone jack) are firmly sealed to maintain its integrity.
- Drop Protection: The phone is resistant to drops onto concrete from over 2 meters. However, extreme impacts can still cause damage.
- Temperature: Operate the device within its specified temperature ranges to prevent damage.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1. Network Connectivity Issues
- No Signal/Limited Service: Ensure your SIM card is correctly installed and activated. Check if you are within your carrier's network coverage area.
- Data Not Working: Verify that your APN settings are correctly configured as per your carrier's instructions (refer to Section 4.3).
- Carrier Compatibility: This device is unlocked and compatible with GSM carriers only (e.g., AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, H20, Straight Talk, Wal-Mart Family Mobile, NET10). It will NOT work with CDMA carriers such as Sprint, Verizon, Boost, or Virgin.
6.2. Battery and Charging Problems
- Device Not Charging: Ensure the charging cable is securely connected to both the phone and the power source. Check the Charge/Sync Port for any debris.
- Short Battery Life: Reduce screen brightness, disable unused features like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when not needed, and close background applications.
6.3. Contact Management
The Sonim XP5 XP5700 operates on a proprietary version of Android 4.4.2 and does not support direct application downloads from app stores. Transferring contacts from other devices may require manual entry or specific carrier-supported methods. Consult your carrier for options regarding contact synchronization or transfer.
