Key Features

Product Description

Grodan Stonewool (rockwool) is manufactured from molten rock, which is spun into fine, cotton candy-like fibers and then compressed into various forms such as cubes, blocks, or slabs. Unlike some other rockwool manufacturers who produce all sizes from a single batch of wool, Grodan differentiates by creating various fiber types. This approach ensures that the material optimally supports the specific requirements of plants at different growth stages. Grodan products are highly effective at absorbing nutrient solutions while simultaneously retaining ample oxygen, which is crucial for promoting rapid plant growth. The product is available in graduated sizes, allowing seedlings started in smaller cubes to be easily transferred to larger blocks and subsequently to slabs, if desired. Alternatively, seedlings or cuttings initiated in Grodan cubes can also be transplanted into more conventional planters and growing mediums. Grodan A-OK plugs are specifically engineered for the propagation of seeds and cuttings, serving as an initial stage before they are "blocked on" into larger growing blocks. The distinctive V-shape design of these plugs is a key feature, as it effectively prevents the roots from tangling between individual plugs within the A-OK plug sheet. These A-OK plugs are conveniently supplied in a sheet format that is compatible with a standard 10x20 flat.

Setup and Preparation

Before use, Grodan A-OK Starter Cubes should be properly hydrated. Submerge the entire sheet of cubes in a pH-balanced nutrient solution or plain water (pH 5.5-6.5) for a few minutes until fully saturated. Avoid squeezing or compressing the cubes, as this can damage their internal structure and reduce their air-holding capacity. Once saturated, allow excess water to drain. The sheet of 98 cubes is designed to fit perfectly into a standard 10x20 flat, providing a stable base for your propagation efforts.

Operating Instructions

  1. Seed Starting: Place one or two seeds into the pre-drilled hole of each hydrated A-OK plug. Lightly cover with a small amount of growing medium or leave exposed depending on seed type.
  2. Cutting Propagation: Insert a prepared cutting into the pre-drilled hole of a hydrated A-OK plug. Ensure the cutting is securely held but not damaged.
  3. Watering: Maintain consistent moisture without over-saturating. The rockwool's structure allows for excellent water retention while providing ample oxygen to the roots. Water from the top or by bottom-feeding the tray.
  4. Nutrient Application: Once seedlings or cuttings have established roots, begin feeding with a diluted nutrient solution appropriate for their growth stage. The cubes are highly absorbent, ensuring efficient nutrient delivery.
  5. Transplanting: When roots begin to emerge from the bottom or sides of the A-OK plugs, they are ready for transplanting. The V-shape design minimizes root tangling, making individual plug separation easy.
    • For hydroponic systems: Transfer the A-OK plug directly into a larger Grodan block or slab.
    • For traditional growing: Place the A-OK plug into a pot filled with soil or other growing medium.

Maintenance

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor Germination/RootingIncorrect pH of hydration water/nutrient solution; insufficient moisture; excessive moisture (lack of oxygen); temperature issues.Ensure pH is 5.5-6.5. Maintain consistent, but not excessive, moisture. Ensure proper air circulation and temperature.
Algae Growth on CubesExcessive light exposure to the cube surface; high humidity.Cover the top surface of the cubes with a light-blocking material (e.g., perlite, clay pebbles) or reduce ambient light directly on the cubes. Improve air circulation.
Roots Tangling Between PlugsWhile the V-shape design minimizes this, prolonged growth in the sheet without transplanting can lead to some tangling.Transplant seedlings/cuttings promptly once roots are visible. Carefully separate plugs if tangling occurs, leveraging the V-shape design.
