Introduction
The Honda EM6500S is a robust and reliable gas-powered generator designed to provide portable power for residential use. Featuring an electric start for convenience, it delivers 6500 running watts and 7500 starting watts, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including home backup during power outages. Its durable construction with steel, aluminum, plastic, and rubber components ensures longevity and performance. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of your EM6500S generator.
Safety Information
WARNING: Operating this generator indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide. This is a poison you cannot see or smell. ONLY use OUTSIDE and far away from windows, doors, and vents.
- Always operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
- Keep children and pets away from the generator.
- Do not touch hot surfaces. The muffler and engine can become very hot and cause burns.
- Do not operate the generator in rain or wet conditions.
- Ensure proper grounding to prevent electric shock.
- The generator is equipped with a CO-Minder system, an advanced technology to prevent death or injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. If carbon monoxide is detected, the generator will automatically shut down.
Setup
Unpacking and Assembly
- Carefully remove the generator from its packaging.
- Attach the wheels and support legs as per the assembly instructions provided in the box. Some users have noted that certain bolts for the axle and stands can be difficult to access.
- Ensure all components are securely fastened before proceeding.
Adding Oil and Fuel
- Place the generator on a level surface.
- Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
- Add the recommended engine oil (refer to the owner's manual for specific type and capacity) until it reaches the upper limit on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
- Securely replace the oil fill cap/dipstick.
- Open the fuel cap and carefully pour fresh, unleaded gasoline into the fuel tank. The tank volume is 6.2 gallons. Do not overfill.
- Securely replace the fuel cap.
Battery Connection (for Electric Start)
- Locate the battery compartment.
- Connect the battery cables, ensuring the positive (+) cable is connected to the positive terminal and the negative (-) cable to the negative terminal.
- Some users have noted that the battery space can be tight for connecting a battery tender or securing the battery.
Operating Instructions
Starting the Generator
- Ensure the generator is on a level surface and all electrical loads are disconnected.
- Turn the fuel valve to the ON position.
- If starting a cold engine, move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position. For a warm engine, use HALF CHOKE or no choke.
- Turn the engine switch to the ON position.
- For Electric Start: Press and hold the START button until the engine starts. Release the button immediately once the engine runs.
- For Recoil Start: Pull the recoil starter grip slowly until resistance is felt, then pull briskly. Repeat if necessary.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the OFF position.
Connecting Electrical Loads
- Allow the generator to run for a few minutes to stabilize before connecting any appliances.
- Plug in your 120V appliances into the standard AC outlets. The generator has 3 total power outlets.
- For higher power demands, use the 120V/240V twist-lock outlet (if applicable and properly wired).
- Do not exceed the generator's running wattage (6500W) or starting wattage (7500W).
Stopping the Generator
- Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
- Allow the generator to run for a few minutes without load to cool down.
- Turn the engine switch to the OFF position.
- Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your Honda EM6500S generator.
Oil Check and Change
- Check the engine oil level before each use.
- Change the engine oil after the first 20 hours of operation, and then every 100 hours or 6 months thereafter.
Air Filter
- Inspect the air filter regularly and clean or replace it as needed, especially in dusty conditions.
Spark Plug
- Inspect the spark plug annually or every 100 hours. Clean or replace if necessary.
Fuel System
- Drain the fuel tank and carburetor if storing the generator for an extended period (more than 1 month) to prevent fuel degradation.
Troubleshooting
- Engine does not start: Check fuel level, oil level, spark plug, and ensure the engine switch is ON and choke is set correctly.
- No power output: Check circuit breakers on the control panel. Ensure no overload condition is present.
- Overload Alarm: If the overload alarm activates, disconnect all appliances, allow the generator to cool, and then restart. Reduce the load before reconnecting appliances.
- Low Oil Alert: If the low oil alert illuminates, the engine will shut down. Add engine oil to the correct level.
- CO-Minder Alarm: If the CO-Minder alarm activates, move the generator to an open, outdoor area. The generator will shut down automatically if carbon monoxide is detected.
