1. Overview

The Carson MicroMini MM-380 is a compact, portable 20x LED lighted pocket microscope designed for detailed observation and digiscoping with smartphones. It features built-in LED and UV flashlights for versatile illumination. This manual provides instructions for its proper setup, operation, and maintenance.

2. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in your package:

3. Component Identification

Familiarize yourself with the main components of your MicroMini microscope:

4. Battery Installation

The MicroMini requires 3 G12 button cell batteries. These are typically included. If replacement is needed:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the microscope unit.
  2. Carefully open the compartment.
  3. Insert three new G12 button cell batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.

Caution: Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries. Dispose of used batteries responsibly.

5. Setup

5.1 Attaching the Smartphone Adapter

  1. Separate the microscope unit from the smartphone adapter clip if they are connected.
  2. Position the adapter clip over your smartphone's primary camera lens. Ensure the clip's opening is centered over the camera.
  3. The adapter uses magnets to secure the microscope. Align the microscope unit with the magnetic attachment point on the adapter clip.
  4. The microscope should snap securely into place.

5.2 Positioning for Digiscoping

Once attached, open your smartphone's camera application. Adjust the microscope's position on the clip and use your phone's zoom function if necessary to eliminate any black edges and achieve a full-screen view of the magnified image.

6. Operating the Microscope

6.1 Using the 20x Microscope

  1. Place the microscope lens directly onto the surface of the object you wish to examine.
  2. Look through the eyepiece or view the image on your smartphone screen (if digiscoping).
  3. Rotate the focus wheel until the image appears clear and sharp.

6.2 Activating LED Illumination (Microscope)

For enhanced visibility, especially in low-light conditions, slide the LED/UV switch to the first position to activate the LED light integrated with the microscope lens.

6.3 Using the Stand-Alone LED Flashlight

To use the MicroMini as a general-purpose LED flashlight, slide the LED/UV switch to the second position. This activates a separate, brighter LED light for illuminating larger areas.

6.4 Using the Stand-Alone UV Flashlight

For specialized applications such as detecting counterfeit currency or observing fluorescent materials, slide the LED/UV switch to the third position to activate the UV flashlight.

6.5 Focusing

The focus wheel is located on the side of the microscope. Rotate it slowly while observing your subject until the image is sharp. The optimal focus distance is very close to the lens.

6.6 Using with Smartphone Camera (Digiscoping)

With the microscope attached to your smartphone via the adapter clip:

  1. Open your smartphone's camera app.
  2. Adjust the microscope's position on the clip until the magnified circle is centered on your screen.
  3. Use the microscope's focus wheel to sharpen the image.
  4. For a correctly oriented image, consider downloading the "CarsonCam" phone application, which can correct the inverted view often produced by pocket microscopes.

Store the MicroMini in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
