1. Product Overview

The Utilitech Plug-in Touch Control Dimmer is designed to convert any lamp with a metal socket into a touch-controlled lamp. This device provides three distinct levels of illumination, allowing users to easily adjust lighting from a subtle night light to full brightness. Operation is simplified by merely touching the lamp's metal surface to cycle through light settings or to turn the lamp on and off. It is compatible with incandescent bulbs up to 200 watts and is engineered for straightforward installation.

2. Safety Information

  • Ensure the lamp control is used with incandescent bulbs only, up to a maximum of 200 watts. Do not exceed the specified wattage.
  • This device is intended for indoor use only. Do not expose to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • Always unplug the lamp from the control unit and the control unit from the wall outlet before performing any maintenance or changing bulbs.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the unit. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Ensure the lamp you intend to convert has a metal socket for proper touch functionality.

4. Setup and Installation

  1. Prepare the Lamp: Ensure your lamp has a metal socket. Unplug the lamp from its power source.
  2. Connect the Control Unit: Plug the Utilitech Touch Lamp Control unit into a standard 120V AC wall outlet.
  3. Connect the Lamp: Plug your lamp's power cord into the receptacle on the Utilitech Touch Lamp Control unit.
  4. Verify Bulb Type: Confirm that the lamp contains an incandescent bulb, not exceeding 200 watts. LED or CFL bulbs may not function correctly or may cause damage.
  5. Initial Test: Once connected, touch any metal part of the lamp's base or body. The lamp should turn on to its lowest setting.

Important Note: For optimal performance, ensure the lamp's metal components are clean and free of non-conductive coatings or paint where touch contact is intended.

5. Operating Instructions

The Utilitech Touch Lamp Control provides three levels of brightness and an off state, cycled by touching the lamp's metal surface.

  • To Turn On (Low Brightness): Touch any metal part of the lamp. The lamp will illuminate at its lowest brightness setting (night light).
  • To Increase Brightness (Medium): Touch the lamp again. The brightness will increase to a medium level.
  • To Increase Brightness (High): Touch the lamp a third time. The brightness will increase to its highest level (full brightness).
  • To Turn Off: Touch the lamp a fourth time. The lamp will turn off.

The cycle repeats with each subsequent touch: Off → Low → Medium → High → Off.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Disconnect the unit from the power outlet before cleaning. Wipe the control unit with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Bulb Replacement: Always unplug the lamp from the control unit and the control unit from the wall outlet before replacing a light bulb. Ensure the replacement bulb is an incandescent type and does not exceed 200 watts.
  • Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, unplug it from the wall outlet and store it in a cool, dry place.

7. Troubleshooting

Lamp does not turn on or respond to touch.
  • Unit not plugged in.
  • Lamp not plugged into unit.
  • Lamp bulb is burnt out or incorrect type.
  • Lamp does not have a metal socket or is coated.
  • Faulty unit.

  • Ensure lamp is securely plugged into the control unit.
  • Replace bulb with a new incandescent bulb (max 200W).
  • Confirm lamp has an exposed metal socket.
  • Test with another lamp or outlet. If issue persists, unit may be faulty.
Lamp flickers or dims inconsistently.
  • Incompatible bulb type (e.g., LED, CFL).
  • Loose connection.
  • Ensure only incandescent bulbs are used.
  • Check all connections are secure.
Lamp stays on or off.
  • Internal fault.
  • Unplug the unit for 30 seconds and plug back in to reset. If issue persists, unit may be faulty.
