1. Introduction
The Palmer Monicon L is a precise analog volume control designed for professional audio environments. It serves as an intermediary device between audio sources, such as computers or audio interfaces, and self-powered monitor loudspeakers. Its passive circuitry ensures signal integrity without coloration. The unit features LED indicators and a built-in headphone amplifier, which are powered by the included DC adapter.
This manual provides detailed instructions for the setup, operation, and maintenance of your Palmer Monicon L to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

- DC 15V 200mA Input: Power input for the included DC adapter.
- MONO SUM Output: XLR connectors for a summed mono output, typically used for a subwoofer.
- OUTPUT 1 (L/R) XLR: Balanced XLR outputs for the first pair of monitor speakers.
- OUTPUT 2 (L/R) XLR: Balanced XLR outputs for the second pair of monitor speakers.
- STEREO INPUT (L/R) Combo Sockets: Balanced combo sockets (XLR/TRS) for the main stereo input.
- AUX INPUT (L/R) RCA & 3.5mm TRS: Auxiliary input featuring RCA connectors and a 3.5 mm TRS jack.
5. Setup and Connections
Follow these steps to connect your Palmer Monicon L to your audio system:
5.1 Power Connection
- Connect the included DC 15V 200mA power adapter to the "DC 15V 200mA" input on the rear panel of the Monicon L.
- Plug the power adapter into a suitable wall outlet. The LED indicators on the front panel will illuminate.
5.2 Audio Input Connections
The Monicon L offers two distinct stereo input options:
- Main Stereo Input (Input 1): Use balanced XLR or 1/4" TRS cables to connect your primary audio source (e.g., audio interface, mixer output) to the "STEREO INPUT L/R" combo sockets on the rear panel.
- Auxiliary Input (Input 2): For secondary audio sources (e.g., computer, media player), use RCA cables to the "AUX INPUT L/R" RCA connectors or a 3.5 mm TRS cable to the "AUX INPUT" 3.5mm jack.
5.3 Audio Output Connections
The Monicon L provides multiple output options for your monitoring setup:
- Monitor Speakers (Output 1 & 2): Connect your self-powered monitor speakers using balanced XLR cables to the "OUTPUT 1 L/R" and/or "OUTPUT 2 L/R" XLR connectors. You can connect up to two pairs of monitors.
- Subwoofer (Mono Sum): If you use a subwoofer, connect it to the "MONO SUM" XLR output. This output provides a summed mono signal of the selected stereo input.
- Headphones: Plug your headphones into the 6.35 mm (1/4") TRS "HEADPHONES" jack on the front panel.

6. Operation
This section details the functions of each control on your Monicon L.
6.1 Volume Control
- STEREO VOLUME: Rotate this large knob clockwise to increase the volume of the selected stereo output, and counter-clockwise to decrease it. This is the primary volume control for your monitor speakers.
- AUX VOLUME: Adjusts the input level for the auxiliary input source. This allows you to balance the volume of your auxiliary device before it reaches the main stereo volume control.
- HEADPHONES: Controls the listening volume for headphones connected to the front panel jack.
6.2 Input Selection
- INPUT SELECTION (1/2): Press the "1" button to select the main stereo input (XLR/TRS combo sockets). Press the "2" button to select the auxiliary input (RCA/3.5mm TRS). Only one input can be active at a time.
6.3 Output Selection
- OUTPUT SELECTION (1/2): Press the "1" button to activate the first pair of monitor outputs (OUTPUT 1 L/R). Press the "2" button to activate the second pair of monitor outputs (OUTPUT 2 L/R). You can activate both outputs simultaneously to listen through both speaker pairs.
6.4 Monitoring Functions
- STEREO MONO: Press this button to sum the stereo signal into a mono signal. This is useful for checking phase compatibility and how your mix translates to mono playback systems.
- MUTE: Press this button to instantly silence all active outputs. Press it again to restore the audio.
- PFL STEREO / PFL AUX: These buttons enable Pre-Fader Listen for the respective inputs. When activated, the selected input signal is routed directly to the headphone output, bypassing the main STEREO VOLUME control. This allows you to monitor an input source without affecting the main speaker output.
7. Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Disconnect the power adapter before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners, aerosols, or solvents.
- Environment: Keep the Monicon L away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, and dust.
- Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, disconnect it from power and store it in a cool, dry place.
