3. Setup

3.1. Charging the Battery

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 5V connector on the PSP system.
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a wall outlet.
  3. The POWER indicator will light up orange, indicating that the battery is charging. It will turn off when charging is complete.
  4. A full charge typically takes approximately 2-3 hours when the system is off.

3.2. Inserting a Memory Stick Duo

A Memory Stick Duo (sold separately) is required to save game data, store multimedia files, and for some system functions.

  1. Locate the Memory Stick Duo slot cover on the left side of the PSP system.
  2. Open the cover.
  3. Insert the Memory Stick Duo with the label facing up, pushing it gently until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the slot cover.

3.3. Inserting a UMD

UMD discs are used for playing games and movies.

  1. Open the UMD drive cover on the back of the PSP system.
  2. Insert the UMD disc with the label facing away from the system, ensuring it is seated correctly on the spindle.
  3. Close the UMD drive cover firmly until it clicks.

3.4. Initial Power On

  1. Slide the POWER switch on the right side of the system upwards and hold it for a few seconds until the screen turns on.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the date, time, language, and other initial settings.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Navigating the XrossMediaBar (XMB)

The PSP uses the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface for navigation. Use the directional buttons (D-pad) and analog stick to move horizontally between categories (e.g., Games, Video, Music, Photo, Network, Settings) and vertically within a category to select items.

  • X Button: Confirm selection.
  • O Button: Cancel/Go back.
  • HOME Button: Returns to the XMB from an application or game.
  • START Button: Used for starting games or confirming selections in some applications.
  • SELECT Button: Used for various functions depending on the application or game.

4.2. Playing Games

After inserting a UMD game disc, navigate to the "Game" category on the XMB and select the game title. Press the X button to start the game.

4.3. Multimedia Playback

The PSP supports various multimedia formats stored on a Memory Stick Duo or UMD video discs.

  • Music: Transfer MP3 or ATRAC3plus files to the MUSIC folder on your Memory Stick Duo. Select "Music" from the XMB to browse and play.
  • Video: Transfer MP4 files to the VIDEO folder. Select "Video" from the XMB. UMD video discs are played by selecting them from the "Video" category after insertion.
  • Photos: Transfer JPEG files to the PHOTO folder. Select "Photo" from the XMB to view images.

4.4. Wi-Fi Connectivity

To connect to a wireless network:

  1. Go to Settings > Network Settings on the XMB.
  2. Select Infrastructure Mode.
  3. Choose New Connection and follow the on-screen prompts to scan for access points and enter network details (SSID, security key).
  4. Note: The PSP 1000 supports older Wi-Fi standards (802.11b) and WEP/WPA security protocols. It may not be compatible with modern WPA2/WPA3 networks or 5GHz Wi-Fi bands.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning the System

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the PSP system.
  • For the screen, use a screen-specific cleaning cloth or a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Keep the UMD drive and Memory Stick slot free of dust and debris.

5.2. Battery Care

  • Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures.
  • If the system will not be used for an extended period, fully charge the battery and then store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Use only genuine Sony PSP batteries and AC adapters.

5.3. Software Updates

Periodically check for system software updates via the Network Update feature (if available and compatible with current network settings) or by downloading updates to a Memory Stick Duo from the official Sony PlayStation website (if still supported).

6. Troubleshooting
