Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter for Stainless Steel Manifold Instruction Manual

1. Product Overview

The Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter is designed for integration with Uponor Vario S stainless steel manifolds, primarily used in underfloor heating systems. This component allows for the precise adjustment and monitoring of water flow within individual heating circuits.

It features an integrated fine adjustment valve and a corresponding adjustment ring, enabling tool-free pre-setting of water quantities. The clear display shows the current flow rate, which is crucial for achieving optimal hydraulic balancing across the heating system. An additional handwheel is included for locking the underfloor heating circuit, providing control over specific zones.

This flow meter serves as a replacement for models such as Cronatherm DV, Unipipe Profi Brass, and Uponor DV (Profi PL).

2. Safety Information

  • Professional Installation: Installation should be performed by a qualified professional to ensure proper function and safety.
  • System Pressure: Ensure the heating system is depressurized before installation or maintenance.
  • Water Damage: Take precautions to prevent water damage during installation and maintenance.
  • Material Compatibility: Ensure all connecting components are compatible with the flow meter's material (fiberglass polyamide) and the system's operating conditions.
  • Operating Limits: Do not exceed the specified operating pressure or temperature limits of the heating system or the flow meter.

3. Package Contents

The package contains one (1) Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter unit.

4. Setup and Installation

The Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter is designed for direct integration into Uponor Vario S stainless steel manifolds. It is crucial to ensure compatibility with your existing manifold system.

Important Note: This flow meter cannot be used with the Manifold TM stainless steel distributor. For Manifold TM, a different part number (1084057) is required.

Installation Steps:

  1. Depressurize System: Before beginning, ensure the underfloor heating system is completely depressurized and drained.
  2. Identify Location: Locate the appropriate port on the Uponor Vario S stainless steel manifold where the flow meter is to be installed.
  3. Prepare Connections: Ensure the manifold port and the flow meter's threads are clean and free of debris. Apply appropriate thread sealant if recommended by plumbing standards or manufacturer guidelines.
  4. Install Flow Meter: Carefully screw the flow meter into the manifold port. Tighten securely, but do not overtighten, to prevent damage to the threads or the flow meter body.
  5. System Refill and Test: Once all flow meters are installed, slowly refill the heating system, bleeding air as necessary. Check all connections for leaks under pressure.

The top bar shows blue caps, indicating return valves, while the bottom bar features red flow meters, which are the subject of this manual. Each flow meter is individually adjustable and displays the flow rate for its respective heating circuit. The entire assembly is mounted on brackets.

5. Operating Instructions

The Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter allows for precise control over the water flow in your underfloor heating circuits.

Adjusting Flow Rate:

  1. Identify Adjustment Ring: The flow meter features a fine adjustment valve with a corresponding adjustment ring. This ring is typically located at the base of the transparent flow indicator.
  2. Tool-Free Adjustment: Rotate the adjustment ring to increase or decrease the water flow through the circuit. No special tools are required for this adjustment.
  3. Read Flow Rate: The transparent section of the flow meter displays the current flow rate. The display range is 0 - 4 liters per minute (0-240 kg/h). Adjust the ring until the desired flow rate is indicated.
  4. Hydraulic Balancing: Adjust each flow meter on the manifold to achieve optimal hydraulic balance across all heating circuits. This ensures even heat distribution and efficient system operation.

Locking a Heating Circuit:

An additional handwheel is integrated into the flow meter for locking a specific underfloor heating circuit. This can be useful for isolating a zone for maintenance or if a particular area does not require heating.

  • To Lock: Rotate the handwheel clockwise until the circuit is closed.
  • To Unlock: Rotate the handwheel counter-clockwise to reopen the circuit.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Uponor Vario S 1013016 Flow Meter.

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the flow meter and its connections for any signs of leaks, cracks, or damage.
  • Cleanliness: Ensure the transparent display section remains clean for accurate flow readings. Use a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution if necessary. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Functionality Check: Occasionally test the adjustment ring and handwheel to ensure they operate smoothly and without obstruction.
  • System Flushing: Follow your heating system's recommended schedule for flushing to prevent sediment buildup that could affect flow meter accuracy.
  • Winterization: If the heating system is to be shut down for an extended period in freezing conditions, ensure proper winterization procedures are followed to prevent damage from freezing water.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with the flow meter.

Issue: Leaks from the Flow Meter or Connections

  • Cause: Loose connections, damaged seals, or a cracked flow meter body.
  • Solution:
    1. Depressurize the system.
    2. Check if the connections are securely tightened.
    3. Inspect seals and O-rings for damage and replace if necessary.
    4. If the flow meter body is cracked, it must be replaced.

Issue: Incorrect or No Flow Reading

  • Cause: Air in the system, blockages, or the handwheel is in the locked position.
  • Solution:
    1. Ensure the heating system is properly bled of air.
    2. Check that the handwheel is fully open (unlocked).
    3. Inspect the circuit for potential blockages or debris.
    4. Verify that the system pump is operating correctly.

Issue: Difficulty Adjusting Flow Rate

  • Cause: Sediment buildup, stiff adjustment ring, or internal damage.
  • Solution:
    1. Attempt to gently rotate the adjustment ring. Do not force it.
    2. If persistent, the system may require flushing to remove sediment.
    3. If the mechanism is damaged, the flow meter may need replacement.
