2. Safety Information

DANGER: Combustible liquid and vapor. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. Vapors may cause flash fire. Use only with adequate ventilation. Ensure proper respiratory protection if ventilation is insufficient.

Proposition 65 Warning: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, during handling and application.
  • Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors. Use in a well-ventilated area or outdoors.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Dispose of rags and waste materials properly according to local regulations, as they may spontaneously combust if not handled correctly. Immediately place used rags in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
  • In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. For eye contact, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

3. Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial for achieving a uniform and durable finish. Follow these steps before applying the stain:

  1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, glue, or old finishes.
  2. Sand the Wood: For bare wood, sand in the direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper, then progress to #150, and finally #180 grit. Do not use finer grits as this can close the wood pores, preventing proper stain absorption.
  3. Remove Dust: After sanding, thoroughly remove all sanding dust using a vacuum or a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. Allow the surface to dry completely if mineral spirits were used.
  4. Stir the Stain: Stir the stain thoroughly before and during use to ensure pigments are evenly distributed. Do not shake the can, as this can create bubbles.

4. Application Instructions

Apply the stain following these steps for best results:

  1. Apply Stain: Apply one liberal coat of stain using a high-quality natural bristle brush or a clean, lint-free rag. Ensure even coverage across the entire surface.
  2. Allow Penetration: Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for 2-3 minutes. For a darker color, allow the stain to penetrate for a longer period, but do not let it dry completely before wiping.
  3. Wipe Excess: After the desired penetration time, wipe off any excess stain with a clean, lint-free rag, moving in the direction of the wood grain. Ensure all excess is removed to prevent a tacky finish.

5. Drying and Recoating

Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain is designed for quick drying:

  • Dry to Touch: The stain typically dries to the touch in 1 hour. Drying times may vary based on humidity, temperature, and wood type.
  • Recoating: If a darker color is desired, a second coat can be applied after 1 hour. Follow the same application steps as the first coat.
  • Topcoat Application: To complete your wood project and provide protection, apply a Varathane polyurethane or other clear finish after the stain has dried for at least 1 hour. Darker stain colors may require a slightly longer drying time before applying a topcoat.

6. Cleanup

Clean tools and spills immediately after use:

  • Tools: Clean brushes and other application tools with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
  • Spills: Wipe up spills immediately with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.
  • Disposal: Dispose of all waste materials, including rags and empty containers, in accordance with local environmental regulations. Rags soaked with oil-based products can spontaneously combust; immediately place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Color: Ensure the wood surface is evenly sanded and free of contaminants. Apply stain uniformly and wipe off excess consistently. Different wood types absorb stain differently, which can affect final color.
  • Tacky Finish: A tacky finish usually indicates that too much stain was applied and not enough excess was wiped off. Ensure all excess stain is removed after the penetration time. High humidity can also prolong drying.
  • Long Drying Time: High humidity, low temperatures, or insufficient ventilation can extend drying times. Ensure adequate airflow and appropriate environmental conditions.
  • Color Not as Expected: Always test the stain on an inconspicuous area of the wood or a scrap piece of the same wood type before full application. The final color can vary based on wood species, porosity, and application technique.
