2. Safety Information
Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating this product. Failure to do so may result in injury or property damage.
- Always turn off the water supply to the irrigation system before performing any installation, adjustment, or maintenance.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, during installation and maintenance.
- Ensure all connections are secure to prevent leaks and water waste.
- Do not operate the sprinkler if any part is damaged. Replace damaged components immediately.
- Keep children and pets away from operating sprinklers.
3. Setup and Installation
The Rain Bird 5000 Series rotor is designed for straightforward installation. It features a slip clutch mechanism for quick adjustment during setup.
- Prepare the Location: Dig a trench for the lateral line and a hole for the sprinkler body, ensuring the top of the sprinkler will be level with the ground surface when retracted.
- Connect to Lateral Line: Attach the sprinkler body to the lateral irrigation pipe. Ensure a watertight seal using appropriate fittings and thread sealant. The inlet connection size is 4 inches.
- Adjust Arc (Initial): The rotor features a slip clutch mechanism. Once installed and the water is on, you can manually rotate the turret to align the fixed left stop with the desired left edge of your watering area. The rotor will then rotate from this point.
- Backfill: Carefully backfill the soil around the sprinkler, ensuring the top of the rotor is flush with the ground level to prevent damage from lawnmowers and to ensure proper pop-up and retraction.
4. Operating and Adjustments
The Rain Bird 5000 Series rotor allows for precise control over its watering arc and distance.
4.1. Arc Adjustment (40° to 360°)
The rotor can be adjusted for a part-circle pattern from 40 degrees to 360 degrees, or for a full 360-degree rotation. This adjustment is made from the top of the sprinkler using a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Increase Arc: Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the arc adjustment slot on the top of the rotor. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to increase the arc.
- Decrease Arc: Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the arc adjustment slot. Turn the screwdriver counter-clockwise to decrease the arc.
- Full Circle: Continue turning clockwise until the rotor clicks into a continuous 360-degree rotation.
4.2. Distance Adjustment
The 3.0 GPM nozzle is pre-installed and provides a specific throw distance. For further distance adjustments, you may need to replace the nozzle with a different GPM rating (sold separately) or use the radius reduction screw.
- Radius Reduction: Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the radius reduction screw located on the top of the nozzle. Turn clockwise to decrease the spray radius, or counter-clockwise to increase it.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your Rain Bird 5000 Series rotor.
- Cleaning: Periodically inspect the nozzle for debris. The self-cleaning arc adjustment screw helps prevent clogging. If necessary, remove the nozzle and rinse it with clean water.
- Winterization: In colder climates, it is essential to winterize your irrigation system to prevent freeze damage. Consult your irrigation system's main manual for specific winterization procedures, which typically involve draining water from the lines and rotors.
- Spring Start-up: In spring, slowly repressurize the system and check all rotors for proper operation and any necessary adjustments.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Rain Bird 5000 Series rotor, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Rotor not popping up | Low water pressure, debris in the riser, damaged spring | Check system pressure, clean the rotor, replace if spring is damaged. |
| Uneven spray pattern | Clogged nozzle, incorrect arc adjustment, worn nozzle | Clean or replace nozzle, adjust arc as needed. |
| Water leaking from base | Loose connection, damaged seal | Tighten connection, inspect and replace seals if necessary. |
| Rotor not rotating | Debris in gear drive, damaged gear drive | Flush the system, replace the rotor if gear drive is damaged. |
