3. Setup
3.1 Attaching the Lens
- Ensure both the camera and lens are powered off.
- Remove the rear lens cap from the lens and the body cap from the camera.
- Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
- Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.
3.2 Attaching the Lens Hood (HK-40)
Align the red dot on the lens hood with the red dot on the front of the lens. Rotate the hood clockwise until it locks securely. The lens hood helps to prevent stray light from entering the lens and causing flare.
3.3 Using the Slip-In Filter Holder
The lens features a slip-in filter holder for 40.5mm filters. To insert a filter, slide the filter into the holder slot located near the rear of the lens barrel. Ensure the filter is seated correctly.
3.4 Mounting on a Tripod or Monopod
The integrated monopod collar allows for stable mounting on a tripod or monopod. Loosen the collar's locking knob to rotate the lens for horizontal or vertical shooting. Tighten the knob firmly once the desired orientation is achieved.

4. Operating the Lens
4.1 Focus Mode Switch
The lens features an A/M, M/A, and M focus mode switch:
- A/M (Autofocus with manual override): Allows manual focus adjustment by rotating the focus ring while autofocus is active.
- M/A (Manual override with priority): Similar to A/M, but manual focus takes precedence with less rotation of the focus ring.
- M (Manual focus): Focus is adjusted manually using the focus ring.
4.2 Focus Limit Switch
This switch allows you to limit the autofocus range, which can speed up focusing when subjects are within a known distance range:
- FULL: The lens will focus across its entire range (from minimum focus distance to infinity).
- ∞ - 10m: Limits focus to subjects 10 meters (32.8 feet) or further.
4.3 Vibration Reduction (VR)
The VR system reduces blur caused by camera shake. Use the VR switch to select the desired mode:
- OFF: Vibration Reduction is disabled.
- NORMAL: Recommended for general photography, compensating for a wide range of camera shake.
- SPORT: Optimized for tracking fast-moving subjects, providing a stable viewfinder image during continuous shooting and panning.
When using a tripod or monopod, the lens's VR system automatically detects the support and adjusts accordingly. A dedicated Tripod Mode is integrated to eliminate subtle ground vibrations.

4.4 Memory Recall Buttons
The lens features memory recall buttons that can be programmed to instantly recall a pre-set focus distance. Refer to your camera's manual for specific instructions on programming and using this feature.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning the Lens
- Lens Elements: Use a blower brush to remove dust and loose particles. For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft cotton cloth or lens tissue lightly dampened with lens cleaner. Wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
- Lens Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
5.2 Fluorine Coat Care
The front element features a fluorine coat, which repels water, dirt, and smudges. This coating makes cleaning easier. When cleaning, follow the general lens element cleaning instructions, ensuring gentle pressure.
5.3 Storage
- Always attach the front and rear lens caps when the lens is not in use.
- Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- If storing for an extended period, place it in its CT-608 lens case with desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your lens, consider the following common solutions:
- Lens not focusing: Ensure the focus mode switch on the lens is set to A/M or M/A. Check that the camera's focus mode is set to autofocus. Verify the focus limit switch is not restricting the focus range inappropriately for your subject distance.
- Blurry images: Confirm the VR switch is set to NORMAL or SPORT if shooting handheld. Check shutter speed and aperture settings on your camera. Ensure the lens elements are clean.
- Lens not attaching securely: Ensure the lens is correctly aligned with the camera's mounting mark and rotated until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
- Unusual noises: A faint whirring sound from the VR system is normal during operation. If other unusual noises occur, discontinue use and contact Nikon support.
For persistent issues, consult your camera's instruction manual or contact Nikon customer support.
