Introduction
The Sky-Watcher Flextube SynScan GoTo Collapsible Dobsonian Telescope is designed for observing celestial objects such as planets, the Moon, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. This instrument combines a large aperture with a portable, collapsible design and computerized GoTo capabilities. The patented collapsible tube design allows for easy transport and quick setup, while the SynScan hand controller provides automated object location.
This manual provides essential information for the proper assembly, operation, and maintenance of your telescope to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Setup
1. Assembling the Dobsonian Base
The Dobsonian base typically requires some assembly. Follow the included diagrams and instructions to securely fasten the sideboards, ground board, and other components. Ensure all screws are tightened to prevent wobbling during operation.
2. Mounting the Optical Tube
Place the optical tube assembly onto the Dobsonian base. The tube transports as two compact pieces. The elegant truss tube design allows for quick setup. Ensure the tube is securely seated in the cradle of the base.

3. Extending the Flextube
Gently extend the collapsible truss poles until the upper cage (containing the secondary mirror and focuser) is fully extended and locked into position. This design ensures consistent performance and maintains collimation.
4. Attaching the Finderscope and Eyepieces
- Attach the 9x50 straight-through finderscope to its bracket on the optical tube.
- Insert either the 10mm or 25mm Plössl eyepiece into the focuser. Use the 1.25" adaptor if necessary.
5. Power Connection
Connect the provided power adaptor to the telescope's power input and to a 12V DC power source (e.g., a car cigarette lighter socket or a portable power tank). Ensure a stable power supply for optimal GoTo performance. An AC adapter for 120V outlets is not included and must be purchased separately if needed.
6. Collimation
Collimation (aligning the mirrors) is crucial for sharp images. While the Flextube design helps maintain collimation, it is recommended to check and adjust it after initial setup and transport. Refer to a detailed guide on Dobsonian collimation for precise instructions. The primary mirror has adjustment screws for this purpose.
Operating Instructions
1. SynScan Hand Controller Operation
The SynScan hand controller provides access to a database of over 42,000 celestial objects and automates the telescope's movement.
- Initial Alignment: Upon powering on, the hand controller will guide you through an alignment procedure, typically a two-star alignment. Accurately centering the alignment stars in the eyepiece is critical for precise GoTo performance.
- Object Selection: Use the menu system to browse categories (e.g., Messier, NGC, Planets) or enter specific object coordinates.
- GoTo Function: Select an object and press "ENTER" or "GO" to command the telescope to automatically slew to its position.

2. Freedom Find Dual Encoder System
The patented Freedom Find dual encoder design allows you to manually move the telescope at any time without losing its alignment. After manually repositioning, the GoTo system will still know its orientation and can resume tracking or GoTo functions without needing to re-align.
3. Tension Control Handle
The patented Tension Control Handle allows you to adjust the friction between the optical tube and the sideboards. This is useful for balancing the telescope with different eyepieces or accessories, ensuring smooth manual movement and stability.
4. Built-in Wi-Fi Control
This telescope features built-in Wi-Fi, allowing control via a smartphone or tablet application (e.g., Sky Safari). Connect your device directly to the telescope's Wi-Fi network. This provides an alternative interface for GoTo and tracking functions.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning Optics
- Mirrors: The primary and secondary mirrors are delicate. Avoid touching them. If cleaning is necessary, use a specialized optical cleaning kit and follow instructions carefully. Dust can often be removed with a blower brush.
- Eyepieces: Clean eyepieces with a soft, lint-free cloth and optical cleaning solution.
2. Storage
When not in use, store the telescope in a dry, dust-free environment. Collapse the optical tube and cover it to protect the optics from dust and moisture.
3. Mechanical Components
Periodically check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Ensure the focuser operates smoothly. Avoid over-tightening any components.
Troubleshooting
- GoTo Inaccuracy:
- Ensure initial alignment stars are accurately centered.
- Verify the telescope is level and the compass direction is correct during setup.
- Check for loose connections in the motor or hand controller.
- Ensure the power supply is stable and sufficient.
- If persistent, contact customer support as a drive issue might be present.
- Focuser Issues:
- If the focuser is stiff or loose, check for adjustment screws and tighten or loosen as needed.
- No Power:
- Verify the power cable is securely connected to both the telescope and the power source.
- Ensure the 12V power source is functional (e.g., car's cigarette lighter is active).
- Poor Image Quality:
- Check collimation.
- Allow the telescope to cool down to ambient temperature (thermal equilibrium).
- Ensure eyepieces are clean.
- Observe from a location with minimal light pollution and good atmospheric seeing conditions.
