4. Setup Guide
4.1 Initial Power-Up
- Connect the supplied power cable to the AC POWER input on the side of the XR12.
- Plug the other end of the power cable into a suitable electrical outlet.
- Flip the power switch to the 'ON' position. The power LED on the front panel should illuminate.
4.2 Network Connection
The XR12 offers three modes for network connectivity:
- Access Point (AP) Mode: The XR12 acts as its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Use this for direct wireless control from a tablet or computer without an external router.
- Wi-Fi Client Mode: The XR12 connects to an existing Wi-Fi network (e.g., your home or venue Wi-Fi). This allows control from any device on that network.
- Ethernet (LAN) Mode: Connect the XR12 to a router or computer via an Ethernet cable for a stable wired connection.
Select the desired mode using the switch on the rear panel and follow the instructions in the X AIR app for network configuration.
4.3 Connecting Inputs and Outputs
- Connect microphones to the XLR/TRS combo jacks (Inputs 1-4) for channels with MIDAS preamps.
- Connect line-level instruments or devices to the TRS jacks (Inputs 5-12). Inputs 11-12 are Hi-Z compatible for direct instrument connection.
- Connect your main PA system to the MAIN L/R XLR outputs.
- Use the AUX 1/2 TRS outputs for monitor mixes or sending signals to external effects processors.
- Connect a USB drive to the USB port for stereo recording and playback.
5. Operating the XR12
5.1 X AIR Control Application
The Behringer X AIR XR12 is controlled exclusively via the dedicated X AIR control application, available for iPad, Android tablets, PC, Mac, and Linux. Download the appropriate app from your device's app store or the Behringer website.
- Launch the X AIR app on your control device.
- Ensure your device is connected to the XR12's network (either directly in AP mode, or via the same Wi-Fi/LAN network).
- The app should automatically detect the XR12. Select it to establish a connection.
- Once connected, you will have full control over all mixer functions, including input gains, EQ, dynamics, effects, routing, and monitor mixes.
5.2 Basic Mixing Functions
- Input Gain: Adjust the input level for each channel to prevent clipping and ensure a strong signal.
- Equalization (EQ): Shape the tone of each channel using the parametric EQ.
- Dynamics: Apply compression or gating to control the dynamic range of signals.
- Effects: Utilize the built-in effects processors for reverb, delay, chorus, and more.
- Routing: Assign channels to main outputs, auxiliary sends, and sub-groups as needed.
- Auto-Mixing: For speech applications, enable Dugan-style Auto-Mixing on designated channels to automatically manage microphone gain sharing.
6. Maintenance
- Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure proper ventilation by not blocking the air vents on the sides of the unit.
- Store the XR12 in a cool, dry environment when not in use, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Regularly check all cable connections for wear and tear.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unit does not power on. | Power cable not connected; power outlet faulty; internal fuse blown. | Check power cable connection. Try a different power outlet. If still no power, contact Behringer support. |
| Cannot connect to XR12 via Wi-Fi. | Incorrect Wi-Fi mode selected; incorrect network settings; interference. | Verify the Wi-Fi mode switch (AP/Client) is set correctly. Check network settings in the X AIR app. Try moving closer to the unit or reducing interference. Consider using a wired Ethernet connection for stability. |
| No sound output. | Main faders down; mute engaged; incorrect routing; faulty cables. | Check main fader levels in the app. Ensure no channels or main outputs are muted. Verify signal routing. Test cables. |
